Q: How much "copy and paste" is too much?

Sometimes it makes good sense to copy and post information from other sources that is concise, helpful, and germane to a discussion.  But copying and pasting someone's c.v., obtuse financial reports, and complete articles is over-doing it to make a point, especially if the copied material contains so much bold, underlined, italicized, and enlarged text to minimize the importance of all the highlighted and salient points.

For me, a brief summary of the out-sourced information and a web link to the source is good enough.  If I want to know more I can easily click on the link and read the sourced info.

I suspect most of you feel about the same.

So offer your guidance:  How much "copy and paste" is too much?

Better to be offered full information in my opinion.

Take Trump for example. When he makes a speach, media outlets such as BBC etc try to make sense of it and write a 2 minute sound bite article.

But take the time to find a full trascript, and you find a word salad of nonsense.

there are times the article is available only through a vpn, so posting the article for our Chinese viewers may be the only way to view it or believe the article actually exists.

Ambi, I disagree.  Most artlcles and news stories referenced at this site are available in one form or another at various sites on the Internet.  A VPN isn't necessary for those people interested in finding out more about a most topics.  Even if a particular topic or news item requires a VPN to read it, that doesn't preclude the poster from summarizing the meat of the story instead of copying and pasting the whole article.  Anyone that wants to learn more about the story can openly ask for details, or by sending a private message to the posting member.  And I believe no self-sufficient, independent-thinking foreigner will get on in China without using a VPN.

I'm not sure what Chinese viewers you're referring to.  I don't see many comments, questions, or answers coming from Chinese.  Maybe you're referring to the website monitors employed by the government to keep tabs on this and similar sites.  Do you really think their world views will be influenced by a copy and paste job here?

Sponge Blab, this is a question about the World Wide Web.

Phil, we clearly understand your choice for moderator.  Your spamming has become obnoxious.

ambivalentmace:

There is no fucking way I would ever stay in China without a VPN available, I have bank accounts blocked here in China that I can't get access, also if you have investments, there is absolutely no substitute for bloomberg, and saying you can live in China without a VPN is the most asinine statement I have ever read from a poster. I would have more respect for an intolerant nationalistic bigot than something so idiotic, go get your half kuai for bullshit. If I lose access and no Vpn, I will be on a plane the next day out of here, even if I have to leave family behind. I got a Master's degree in Computer Science while I was here and set up Linux servers in three separate countries to make sure I never get screwed by the ccp firewall, but that is still no guarantee. There are 24 million videos on youtube to learn English, How many are on Youku that are worth a shit that are not copies anyway?

openly ask for details, what in the hell are you smoking?

OK, let's try your way

Why should I have confidence as an investor in a country that has determine that only one man is smart, wise and competent enough to run a country with 1.3 billion people and so many educated (fake) PHD individuals and never select another head boss, a monarchy, and if something happens to this guy, does that mean the country will be unstable for my money and investments to be here? What message does this send to the investment world that only one person is fit for office in your whole country?

NOW, give some details before ADMIN deletes this shit. I suspect your a ghost account set up by someone who works for ECC to try and moderated the controversial banter, but since so many things are not allowed already, neutering posters is not going to work, just block all foreigners and fill the damn forum with fake foreigners with bad English and be done with this mirage of harmonious bullshit.

Ambi, I didn't say you (or others) should try to live in China without using a VPN.  You previously said some readers here don't have VPNs and they can't read full articles at all websites, and you said that justifies copying and pasting whole articles.  I said most outside topics discussed at this site can be found on the Net without using a VPN, and if that's a problem, a reader has ways of contacting the poster for additional information.  I am not against using VPNs.  I am advocating less copying and pasting of lengthy articles and other nonsense.  You misunderstood my way.

ambivalentmace:

thanks for clarification, by the way, there are many free vpn's that work here if anybody can use torrent sites to get them and a couple of operating  systems that have vpn's built into the browser.

I remember someone posted something about www.epicbrowser.com. I never tried it. I have no use for pnv, but it might be worth a shot to someone. I'm sure there are others out in the interweb wilderness.

imagine if everyone started doing  it that. nobody would come looking for answers here.  often people who are doing it, do it for three reasons:

1) To spam anybody who has an opposing point of view. These people are not really interested in other peoples' opinion. They will never look at counter-arguments, only looking for articles that reinforce their own view.

2) provocation. they are well-aware how this will irritate others, this is in fact what they most enjoy.

3) give themselves purpose

if they are doing it in their own threads, it's not too bad. but doing it somebody else's is just downright anti-social. really it's just spamming and in most forum's they would be banned. copying a paragraph here or there or referencing a source is ok, but beyond that it's just selfishness

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
