The fastest train will get there in 4 hours 48 minutes.  Can be slightly slower depending on how many stops along the way.  Expect to pay about 555 rmb for lowest class seating.  Trains leave from Shanghai Hongqiao rail station.

cooter:

This is the website I normally use for searching train schedules in China.  They seem to be the first ones (in English anyways) to update their schedule after any changes.  I know they were the only one updated for a while after they slowed all the trains down after the accident in Wenzhou.

The 'Z' sleeper-train was nice. Board Shanghai station in the evening, when you wake the next morning there you are in Beijing !    easy-peasy...

I recently made the trip from Shanghai to Beijing on the G2 train.  I took the first-class ticket.  It was about 900 RMB but well worth it.  A very comfortable ride.

go to chinatravelguide.com then click on trains, then type your destination, from shanghai to Beijing,, then choose the type of train u want to travel with, the prices are all  listed there.

its better u chose a fast speed train whose ticket may cost you some 500 and above rmb and choose from shanghai railway station to Beijing south, nice journey
