Q: How much weight have you gained whilst in China?

I recently read a story in the China Daily about a woman who comes to China and loosers weight, even though she eats what she wants. I have gained heaps of weight and I don't eat heaps of food at all, probably one main meal a day and fruit etc. I drink some beer but nothing different to what I used too.

I gained around 20kg and lost a lot of muscle....this was over the first 2 years...
after 2 years a realised I was very fat was 100kg 3 months ago now trying to lose weight again currently 94kg...aim to get back down to around 80kg

My main problem is i love the food here so much, it also seems too cheap and too easy to get every time i walk along the street i see people selling things to eat, in the UK if i saw food for sale it was often too expensive to go and buy (certainly could not buy everyday) but in China you can buy a nice baozi for 1 yuan, its hard for me to resist

The weight has stayed pretty constant, but I have gotten a whole hell of a lot flabbier. Then again I had just left the military when I first came here compared to now my only workout is 12oz curls.

The first 2 months in China I gained 10 lbs.
It was a combination of eating at too many "western" restaurants and no exercise (unlike at home).
I know what you all mean about the flab.
After that I stuck with the local food, and found a way to at least get some exercise, and I have maintained ever since.
My beer intake in China is higher than at home, but not by much.....I don't think it's the issue.
When I can't find a gym, I ride a stationary bike and do push-ups.

When I stay with my girl's family I usually gain a few pounds. They just keep putting food in my bowl!

OuShanMu:

I had the same problem, seems because im 40% larger they think i need 400% more food, i had to have a serious chat with them about how much weight I had gained while in China and that I wanted to lose some...now they finally let me serve myself...

I have lost weight and gain a little muscle. I exercise a lot more here since I don't drive and I am traveling constantly. I walk just about everywhere when I'm at my home city.

In my first 2 weeks I lost 2 kgs just from the change to suddenly walking everywhere . I haven't weighed myself yet but the last month I feel like I've gained weight. Idk if it's just the food I eat or what (which admittedly is a lot of KFC & McD's) but I just feel like I'm gaining a kilo a day o_O

My clothes still fit though ... guess that's a good sign

I only spend a month or 2 at a time there. I eat a lot because I see something I need to try it and drink more beer that I would back in Australia. I have not put on weight at all in my time there and it is because I walk a lot. Spend a week or 2 on the road each time and on those trips I also climb all the mountain trails whenever I can find one etc. The funny thing is that I have taken on a typical Chinese diet even back in Australia and since then in the ensuing 3 years I have lost more than 15 kg. I can only put that down to no KFC, Maccas, soft drinks, mashed potatoes, less white bread (although I eat heaps of rice) hardly any desert(which I used to have almost every day) etc.

Njord:

I eat like a local daily, McDonald's, KFC or BK 1 time a week at best, so it's 90% local food... For me I'm positive it's simply a lack of exercise, not diet although my eating pattern has also changed, now I eat dinner at 9 or 10:00 at night, breakfast at 10:00 in the morning... Back home I would be up and breakfast done ay 8:00, noon eat lunch and dinner between 5 and 6:00... So lack of exercise, changed eating pattern, and a local diet... could be the combination...

I still get up around 6.30 0r 7 and either eat at home or wander down to the marke t. Usually only snack at lunch on street type food and the usual sharing plenty of different dishes at home or resturant for dinner mostly with a bottle or 2 of local beer with a bigger night maybe once or twice a week . Eat heaps of fruit as well. As i said I walk a fair bit but I would imagine that if I spent a full winter in Nth China (doubt I ever will too fkn cold) I wouold pack it on because the walking would be out the window.

I weigh about the same. I just follow the same rule I did back home: eat if you're hungry, don't eat if you're not hungry. If you really want to eat something, but you're not hungry, chew a piece of gum or eat some fruit. I mostly just drink water, and some milk for the calcium. I'm lazy, so I don't work out here. Is it just me, or do the hard beds in China unintentionally give you some core muscle? Or is that just from walking everywhere?

I initially lost 20 pounds. But I've put on 25 now. That said, when I first arrived I had a difference schedule. Most of my life I've be skinny when I work from noon to about seven. Any schedule beyond that and I get plumper.

The first I came to China I put on about 5kgs, mainly due to drinking too much and exercising too little. I've lost about 10kgs since then by just eating 3 meals a day and not snacking in between and because I managed to curb my addiction to sugar.

Always lose a little in the first month, gain it back, and stagnate for the rest of the year.

I have always been able to maintain my weight. That is of course because I had to while I was a wrestler in school. I have high metabolism so most of the time I find myself in the same boat as that girl I eat whatever I want and I don't gain. Even when I was trying to gain weight I only probably gained 5lbs.

I started out in China quite "pon pon" and I drink more beer in China, but with all the walking and involuntary stair climbing I lose about 5 kg per year living here.

Nothing I gained nothing. If I did gain any weight it would probably be one 2 to 3 lbs. Eating rice and vegetables won't make me gain much weight especially with all the walking I do.

i felt prity healthy and was the same weight until i came to guangzhou, i mean i feel ok but ive put on almost 10kg, i had a goal that if my trip was a 1 km away i would just walk and i would stop using the escalators  and what do you know its quicker to use the stairsr in china since nobody want to walk and they are al stuck on the escalator chatting away, but i eventually stopped this since i got tired of waiting for my friends who refuse to walk

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
