Q: I accidentally broke mirror in the gym. Should I pay for it?

The gym's manager wants to handle this involving police. Any suggestions? Thanks.

It sounds like he is trying to scare you into paying extra. I would recommend getting an assertive Chinese friend to accompany you. Even if you are fluent in Chinese having a Chinese person on your side reduces the chances of getting shafted.

Mirrows are not that expensive in China, and since you admited already you broke it, the Gym manager wants to make sure you replace it by involving the local Police.

I will have a couple of suggestions to you:

One will be that until this is resolved, always have a Chinese friend of yours nearby to serve as your witness in case the Police gets involved. The only thing to resolve is the amount to be paid for replacing the mirrow, and should be negotiated to a mutual satisfaction. I am sure at your city of residence there are many selling anmd installing morrows. Visit one with the outside dimensions of the mirrow (plus the thickness) and find out cost. If broken mirrow was installed on a wall, find out also cost of installation, Then, that amount should be what you should offer to pay.

And second, if the Police gets involve, do not panic, you are not really in a "problem". Just say that yes, you broke the mirrow, that it was not done on purpose, and that you are willing to replace it, but that the manager wants too much money for that, Also say it is a private matter, and that Police is not needed at all. And as soon as the manager agrees to a reasonable amount, you will pay it because you are an honest person. Bet you the Police will be symphatetic with you and not with the manager.

The po po? Fuck that, he's trying to scam you out of more money. Find a Chinese friend, get them to find someone who sells mirrors, take them to the gym and get a quote. Otherwise the gym guy will be like "This is a special type of mirror that costs 10 million dollars."

Some one pointed out that a certain troll just posts without a back story. This is a perfect example of a post that needs a back story. How you broke the mirror is important to giving you a good answer. If you broke it accidentally call the police yourself. You can't figure that out? If you broke it while doing something wrong then you better offer extra.
