Q: If I get another job, can I quit the one I have?

Has anyone ever done this before?

In brief, I just started a University position and only after three weeks there, I absolutely hate it, 90 percent because of the two women I have to deal with, who in my opinion are complete bitches. One is the FAO, the other is more or less my supervisor in the English department. I don't want to delve any further now, but if I were home Inwouod have already quit and told the both of them to go to hell. Second, I hate the area I live in. Basically a dirty ghetto, with this big stupid campus right in the middle of it all. The schedule is ass also, I work Monday, Tuesday and FRIDAY. I have a Chinese wife who lives about a 100 kilometers away, and it is annoying as hell of this schedule. Not to mention after three weeks some peckerhead kid complained of my class being "too easy" which has come down on me hard with the English supervisor bitch. I went and asked her what I need to do or what they want me to teach. She had no answers except if she was the teacher she could do it herself and gave me some "topics" as an outline, but I can't do them because they were done last term. The whole "Oral English" thing is annoying because there is no book or outline, I can do what I want until someone complains and then the bricks fall on my head, and now I have to spend a day crafting another fking lesson plan and hope this will be satisfactory but who knows.

i am already looking around and have an interview on Friday. Fortunately my contract ends with this hellhole in January. I wish it could be tomorrow. This position is not far from my wife's town and probably pays more money and I can be home every night.

This campus is a satellite campus of the college which has another location, and could probably get someone to come out and replace me, and I really want to go. However, I think knowing the FAO bitch she will make it very difficult so I will be stuck there. I don't know the procedure now because I have never decided to quit midterm. This place is so strict and so petty with their rules and will make it difficult for me.

Has anyone else resigned after finding another employer? I know I will need that "Release Letter" bullshit. But maybe the school might give me an out. Dunno.

Sorry for the rant, but could use some advice.

Have a detailed read over the Contract you signed and if you find anything what Uni doesn't follow, you can submit Resignation notice.

Uni must respect Contract 100% ... same as you!

Usual discrepancies are/were: -late salary payments; -required to perform more classes than stipulated in the Contract; -apartment not suited as promised in the Contract ... and more.

I suggest, you follow Contract's resignation notice and you don't resign tomorrow-am-gone.

You will most likely need SAFEA, gov. org. which issued your WP to retrieve required documents and  last pay.

Enter 'SAFEA' in search above for thread with addresses and contact no. around China. I suggest, you use ph.no. and not listed email address because nobody reads and  replies to emails. Listed phone numbers might be out of date, but I guess, you can easily find current ph. no.

You will have loads of problems despite you will resign because of Uni.'s Contract disrespect, so I guess, you are better off to complete these 4 months, i.e. finish the Contract.

I heard '...your lessons are not interesting...' only once at my 2nd School in China ... after that, I have never accepted job which doesn't include set curriculum/book.

You can be fired, too, never forget that!

Good luck!

Give one month notice then walk away clean. The clause that allows you to do this is in your contract.

icnif77:

How many times did you do that? 30-days notice and walk ... with all necessary documents for changing an employer?

Where it is written (in your contract) you can change an employer after you give 30-days Resignation notice?

You cannot resign and keep your RP because weather is too hot or too windy ... pay attn. to '.. and keep your RP ...'

TPP:

A 'standard' contract has the 30 day clause which works both ways, you or they can give 30 days notice to sever employment. I believe it is a legal requirement but what would I know? I only ever had 2 jobs, the first job with 5 years service. I gave a month notice and left without issue. On my last day they gave me the separation letter. Next RP went smoothly. If you aren't a complete dick there shouldn't be a problem.

a few things struck me reading the OP.

you are complaining about working 3 DAYS a week ???

yes, working only Monday Tuesday AND Friday sucks given that your University Admin have probably given you the worst times to have your classes, as seems to be the norm for all FT's.- so you have more time to be creative.

So you have to create lesson plans ???

OMG !!! you actually have to do your job.

Have you tried negotiating with your Dept about moving your Friday class(es)?

If you present a practical plan for re-scheduling your Friday classes and outline the benefits to the Uni you work in, it shows some initiative on your part.

End of the day, you are there only until January so it is not the end of the world.

make the most of it.

it is up to you if you are going to be miserable or find some positives - and they are there if you look for them.

Serve out your notice period, but under no circumstances earn any money independently of the employer that provides your visa (especially since your colleagues appear to be 'bitches').

Not so much having to do "lesson planning" it's a case of I don't know what the students want from me and the school really does not know either. I will do almost anything they want me to do. So yesterday I spent about five hours doing "plans" and hopefully the one student who complained will be happy, although what I really want to do is beat the shit out of him.

The students by and large aren't bad, but I hate the FAO and my supervisor. Just a couple of  cunts to be quite blunt. Antagonistic, unhelpful. I hate asking either of them anything or come to the with a problem. The FAO is basically worthless. It's sad because I wanted them to like me and have a positive result there but it's turned bad for me. Also, I hate the location, and I do hate working Monday, Tuesday and fucking Friday. I have a wife who lives about a 100 km away and was hoping to see her a couple of days a week, and this stupid schedule kills that.

I do feel like I am in jail there and am dreading to go back there. If I had the power, I would have quit the job last week. But I am stuck at that piece of shit for three more months.

This is the new job that you started, after posting all of those questions about release letters and such?  They gave you a six month contract?!  That should have been a major red flag.

1. Three days a week, and you’re complaining?  Talk to them about rescheduling.

2. There ARE oral English books that you can buy, if you REALLY need one, but as a general rule they all are terrible.  One of the advantages to working in a college/university is the autonomy that you have to tailor your class to your teaching style and your students.

3. Get to know your students. If they’re complaining that your classes are boring, make the classes about things that they can relate to/find interesting. One way that you can do that is by having the students fill out an “interesting topic” survey. Alternatively, you could try not being boring.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
