Q: I'm a teacher from the UK, in Thailand how can I get a work visa for Guangdong without flying home?

I have a work visa and work permit here in Thailand, do you think it's possible to apply at the Chinese embassy here instead of the UK? I've asked several recruiters in China this question but no-one has given me a clear answer.  I really want to work in Zhuhai or Shenzhen if possible. If Guangdong isn't possible, do you know where I can find a list of which provinces will be able to process a work visa for me without me flying back to the UK? Or does anyone know what the situation is in Hainan/ Yunnan/ Guangxi or Xiamen? Many thanks.

It certainly was possible a few years ago - I had my Z processed in Chiang Mai. The HR woman said that the place of application needed to be specified on the FEC and I had to fill in a second document (with all the same info as the main one) because I was applying outside of my country. Easy.

What was possible for one province may not work for another though, so there's no guarantee...

I don't know if this will work for you, a friend got his Z visa in KL earlier this year just on a tourist visa. I've heard the Chiang Mai consulate is friendlier than the Bangkok one, so it might be worth heading to CM for this one.

Thanks. Yes I have had solid offers but when it comes to the visa issue they just assume I'll be flying back to the UK to apply. When I say that's not possible financially they lose interest and tell me they can't process the visa for me. I did have one recruiter just say that I could maybe get a visa in Hong Kong, but I thought that Guangdong had changed the rules on this? I feel so confused about it all -I just wish there was a clear-cut answer.  If Guangdong is out of the question, do you where I can find info on the rules for other provinces in the south such as Guangxi/ Yunnan/ Hainan/ Fujian? I'm in the far south of Thailand so I'll have to apply in Hatyai.

I've just read about someone mailing their passport back home to get the visa stamp, do you think that would work ? Has anyone got their visa that way?

GuilinRaf:

Hi!

I would be very reluctant to part with my Passport like that.

Here in China, when we renew our visa, we are given a receipt that we must carry with us at all time proving that we have a passport and that it is in xyz police station, etc.

Being caught without a passport can be a big hassle.

Sorry for not being able to be more helpful.

Go and stay somewhere decent and reliable in HK, or close to a British (Home) embassy/consulate wherever you may be, and ask them if you can have the passport delivered to them.  If you can, problem solved.

Using a visa agent in Wimbledon, SOuth London, England is what I shall be doing when the need arises, but I shall stay in HK.

Don't you need a permanent residential address in the U.K. to apply? Also doesn't it take a few weeks to be processed? Staying in HK all that time sounds pricey! Have you previous experience with getting a passport delivered to a British embassy? What is the likelihood they would refuse? Thanks

This is web link of School in China authorized to hire foreigners:

http://www.anesl.com/schools/info.asp?province=Guangdong&keyword=Univers...

Change parameters for 'Province' and 'keyword' (level of the School) in link, and you can ask Schools about Z visa processing directly.

I suggest, you look for job in smaller cities. As I know, Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenzhen PSB require Z visa pick-up in the country of origin.
