Q: Is it considered rude or unhealthy to blow your nose?

Never seen Chinese ever blowing their nose, even when sick.
I have, however, often been stared at when blowing mine, especially when at the table. So what's the deal here? Is it considered gross? Or unhealthy?

Am, have you only just arrived in China? I see people snotting right into their hands almost every day and then wiping their snotty hands off their clothes and continuing with their business. The concept of using tissues hasn't caught on here. So snot and spit away as much as you want. If you go to a rural place you can even take a dump in the middle of town square and no-one will look twice at you.

i agree, i see people blowing there nose on to the floor in a mall or bus. i think they must mean it is impolite to blow your nose into a napkin. but it is not rude to pull your pants down in the middle of a busy street and go number 2. go figure. if you lose ass do you gain face?

I am somewhat of an allergy sufferer and when I blow my nose into a tissue my wife and her mother seem disgusted, if you can actually believe that. It's true though. Of course they tell me I use too many tissues as well. And, "Don't toss the tissues in the toilet!"

My girlfriend not only appears digusted when I do this, she also claims it's very bad for my health. That the best thing to do is just wait for the mucus to flow down and out your nose before wiping it off. I don't like this alternative.

Also, blowing your nose at a dinner table is a big no no.

If it's rude, then I don't care if I'm considered the rudest person in China. When I'm sick, my nose runs like a faucet. When I have allergies, same deal. I'm not going to sit there sniffling until my head hurts...even then it doesn't work. I use a lot of tissues. That's not even mentioning the sneezing. No way I could live without tissues.

Ive heard many times that it is rude. But that doesnt make me do it any less. If they can look at me as rude, and not the old man who just let a snot rocket fly in the middle of the side walk, then I just think its something they should work on.

And its not really polite to blow your nose loudly at the dinner table anywhere. But its not rude if you do it discreetly... and a helluva lot more sanitary and polite than spitting bones or shelling a prawn and spitting out the shell

I love the imagery of "Snot Rocket."

It's rude to blow your nose but it's perfectly fine to pick your nose.

You can pick your friends, you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friends nose...or can you?

A:Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever foreigners do.  I spent 15 years in China but I wouldn't say there are that many don'ts....Don't assume that many people speak English though and learn some Chinese. Don't speak much about politics unless you want to praise Chinese system.  -- Natalie363
