Q: Is it expected of foreigners to regularily call their Chinese parents in law?

I have not had much contact with my Chinese in-laws since getting married and have gotten on with my life as usual. But my wife made some comments that suggest I should make more of an effort to call them to see how they are. They don't ever call me and my Chinese is not good enough to have a long conversation with them anyway so what is expected of me?

I can't see the reason why you would ever want to  ! Think about it... when you first met your wife I bet that you didn't ask " When can I meet your folks ?'.

You met her...married her... not them.

So I would stay clear... I can't for the life of me understand this aspect of the Chinese.

If you ask "how are they" when your wife has finished a conversation with them, then I think you've shown enough interest.

I assume your wife talks to them at least once per day.
