Q: Is it true that some hotels in China charge differently if you're a Chinese or a foreigner?
I heard this rumor, but I don't know if it's true or not and for what reason there is such discrimination?
Do anybody know some hotels which do it? I will then avoid them and also not recommend them to visitors.

No its not true but some Chinese negotiate on the asking price.... You should stick to good hotels they have a board with the cost per room.
Even the price on the board is not a definitive price and can be negotiated.
Some hotels will not take non Chinese as the hotel is not consiered good enough for them
As for price I stay outside and let the wife arrange the room

I have friends who have been told a price higher than the actual price because they were foreign. They found out later they were paying too much ... smh
friend got discount in a hotel in Beijing as the hotel was called ningxia the city where she came from, you can find hotels named after home cities and if you are Chinese and bring in your id card showing where you live you get discount.
I used a site to book my room and would have changed my hotel if I thought I could do better.
The hotel posted rate was three times the price i paid. I read that you can negotiate our price.
The posted price for breakfast on the site was expensive $12-$25. I'd skip breaky for that much.
The $25 breaky was at the Sheridan, and it was $8 /58Y when I got there.
When you book into a hotel, it has to be approved by the local PSB, otherwise you won't get a room, as they have to register you. I have stopped at hotels before, that aren't authorised, but they let me in because I have a Chinese drivers licence, they didn't charge me more, because I am a foreigner either. Depending on the town you are in you may have to register at the local Police Station as there is only one hotel. Just take your passport and be polite etc, I am sure they (the police), won't give you another room
Can you negotiate prices at all hotels? Even Western ones?
Guys, in China you can negotiate a price for anything. Some may tell you they do not discount prices, I just walk away then and 90 % of the time I am called back as I walk away and offered a discount.
Take hotels. They do charge more to foreigners than to locals, and sometimes by a lot. They ALL do that. One room may be 580 yuan per night for a foreigner, and 283 yuan [per night to a Chinese, and it is the same darn room.
Take for example the Shangri-la hotel (5 stars) inn Beihai, a room in top floor (beautiful room and view) is 950 yuan per night to foreigners, and 700 yuan per night to natives. The Nanfeng Hotel(4 stars) in Guangzhou, for foreigners a room is 388 yuan per night, for natives is 287 yuan.
So, do your homework and do use your girlfriend to make the reservations and set the price without mentioning you.
