Q: To my friends here, we need to be careful.

There's a lot of things going on, if you are an expat in China its time to open this subject.

As some of you have seen there was a football star sent to Chinese jail for 4 years and waited 2 years in jail for that court date because he couldn't pay $100,000, this was all due to a bar fight that he didn't even start, yesterday there was a Pakistani student who was gutted with by a local motorbike driver with a knife and he died before reaching the hospital.

Last week and man yelled at me in English ( because I took too long to park my car, he was behind me, then he saw I wasn't chinese.) He said you get out and go back to Trump, he went on and on yelling and yelling, he offered to fight me or should I say he tried to provoke me into a fight but that football star came to my mind and I held back and just had a war of words, also he saw my kids in the car (eye wittnesses) I was using  my phone to record a video, thats what sent him away.

Why are locals upset with us more and more?

Fact 1. Trump has put the squeeze on Chinese products, $234 Billion if I'm correct, some city business men might tartget you for verble abuse.

Fact 2. These people take great pride in them selves and like to save face.

What are we telling you to do?

1. Don't touch Chinese, even if they touch you first, than its time to think James Bond and use your head and look for cameras near by, call the police and use your phone to make a video, you must record them by video, this will work better then your first, there is no self defence here, nor will the police trust you.. I know what you guys are saying: F*** That, I'm gonna fight back! Come on guys the tough guy crap is not going to work. But recording a video will help or making sure there are cameras near by.

2. FACT: Locals here want to provoke you into a fight, they smile and laugh as a tool to make you land the first hit so the police can help them before helping you. Once you hit them first they have the right to start pounding the crap out of you and they would, laws and courts don't scare these guys here, but it should scare us.

3. Don't argue, talk to or fight people outside, like drivers, bikers, E-bikers. These guys are filled with anger as they hold back daily life stress far longer then we do.

4. It doesn't matter where you are from, if you look American,  you're a target during this economic battle.

5. Don't be the big guy that starts fight over tiny stuff, you will lose only because you are here. You could lose alot more.

This is becoming more and more common for all of us that have been working here long term. This isn't like before, its getting worse and even Foxnews sees this worse in the future.

Nationalism is rising, so watch your back and keep cool and don't agrue. never argue, walk away! Use your head, use your phone to record a video. Find another way, if he pushes you, fake an injury call for help.

I'll also throw in my two cents worth...  A reminder to everyone:

• Chinese don't fight in the Old school 'honorable' way that most Westerners grew up with.  I mean they don't fight One on One, they'll jump you in packs.

• They don't 'Throw in the towel' and quit hurting a guy when he's down.  I've seen video of them stomping a guys skull as he lay on the sidewalk.

• They will attack from behind with a weapon.

I'm just saying it isn't Old school fight like a lot of us grew up with.  Ironman is totally right.  Walk away.  You can't win.  Yes, of course you can beat the guy in a fight, but police will still hold you as Guilty, rob your savings, and deport you.

Walk Away.

Great advice, but, as a fellow American, I will take it one step further and simply go back to the US. I've been dealing with hostility and anti-American sentiment (from Chinese and other foreigners alike) for the past eight years and it's simply not worth it anymore. With a rise in nationalism and a faltering economy, things will only get worse. And if I had children here I sure as hell would take them back to the US asap.

ironman510:

I told this to my wife the other night, it's just not worth it anymore, that and educational needs and requirements are becoming more challenging too. I feel you.. What stops me? The hourly wage is 4x times higher than my home state back in the U.S.. But still I'm starting to feel the itch for change.

Quinn68:

Yeah, I totally get that. Sadly, when I go back to teaching in my home state I'll make 3X less (disposable income) than I do here. On the other hand, I'll increase my state pension and future social security payments (despite what everone says, it's not going anywhere). Also, I like to look at this way - if I have a heart attack in the US, chances are I'll survive. In China, I'll most definitely die (especially if they know I'm American). And, most importantly, I'll be able to look at myself in the mirror every morning knowing I'm not selling myself out to a country where no one really wants me in the first place.

Everyone around where I live knows im Canadian and treats me with respect and are very welcoming to me..... at least to my face. I get mistaken to for an American all the time although one of the first things people usually ask you is where you are from. So I can clear that up pretty quick. Ofcourse there is the odd person who dont like foreigners period...so there is no getting to them.

Once they know im Canadian they will usally tell me how much they hate Americans and say they are assholes. Although its mostly caused by your goverenment and not the people. I guess that is something you Americans have to live with when travelling abroad. expecially with these tarrifs Ive been wearing my " I am Canadian" Beer T-shirt more often with the Candian flag right on it. ...just incase.

RandomGuy:

Exactlly, all the people I interact with from restaurant owners to shop keepers to my local police officers to my neighbors knows that I am German and that I have been living here for many years without ever causing any issue nor getting into any troubles. Even when Germany is saying or doing things that China doesn't like, I have never gotten into any troubles. The type of foreigners who get into fights with locals are typically the ones who would also get into fights with people back home. When some manchild tries to provoke you just laugh it off and be on your way, why would you even waste your time with such people? Do you stop for every bums doing stupid things back home? No, then why would you in China.

Don't assume too much or that they actually know or even care where any of us are from, out of 10 people there's always 1 that would start trouble with any of us, actually Canada and China have a far worse business relationship than the U.S. has with China, China doesn't need Canada, only China only wants company take overs in Canada. Now RandomGuy as I've been trying to teach you from day one, don't be so arrogant, while we wouldn't waste our time on them, they would gladly give us their time. Once the writing on the wall becomes very clear then yeah, im out in a hurry...i just hope its not too late. I see how things go when Trump imposes these 300 billion in tariffs...I think that's when shit might hit the fan for real...right now its the 30 odd billion is not so bad....300 billion will won't be taken so lightly...

I have some stick on tie pins that show a Canadian flag and a Chinese flag together since my school sends kids to Canada. I wear it every day. If you do have to fight use everything around you, chairs, tables, bottles and never stop for a breath and allow them to regroup and never stop hitting until they all on the ground. Just let your adrenaline tell you if you stop the next vision is your ancestors or hell. I don't socialize at all anymore and order everything delivered, one more year and out of here.

Stiggs:

Yep, if you have to fight, fight to win.

But then, be prepared to get the fark out asap if you need to. A guy I knew was attacked by some dickhead. He tried to walk away, took a few punches, slaps and lots of abuse then finally retaliated and decked him.

There were cameras there, witnesses etc but the police still turned into the aggressive foreigner attacking the poor Chinese boy who was minding his own business. When the police first got involved they said he'd done everything right, tried to avoid trouble and all that and the matter was ended, the Chinese guy had started everything and got what he deserved.

Then the Chinese family got involved demanding compensation and suddenly the only thing up for discussion was how much RMB the foreign devil should be forced to pay the peasant family, when he had nothing wrong and the police had previously acknowledged that.

It dragged on for a while, the American dude was quite willing to pay the extortionate hospital bill to end it - he even felt like it was worth it for the pleasure of smacking the fuckwit, but when they starting talking about him being forced to pay tens of thousands of RMB because he defended himself, he bailed. Did a midnight runner and they got nothing.

Some good advice here. It really boils down to ...just walk away.

Who cares if some peasant if screaming 'fuck your mother' at you for whatever stupid reason? It only matters if you give a shit about his 'opinion' and there is just no good way it can end. Be the bigger, more dignified man and just walk away.

One thing I will say about this though is that it's not something new. Ok I'm not in China now so can't say if it has got worse or not but I had a guy trying to fight me back in 2002 because America had hurt China's feelings somehow (I'm not American and he knew that but ... China). Since then, and before then too,  there have been plenty of instances of butthurt showing itself and foreigners in China getting the brunt of it.

More than once I, or people I knew got abuse because some celebrity voiced an opinion regarding one of the provinces, or a politician said something, or Japan / Taiwan did something that offended China and so America was somehow to blame, or the local media blew something out of all proportion to deflect from whatever was going on in China at the time... there's always something. And it's not a safe feeling for expats.

It's China. Pretty much every time something happens that affects China somehow the butthurt comes out again but usually never for too long. I doubt that will ever change, there will always be something coming up, the question is what will be the event that really makes the place unliveable? Military action over North Korea? Economic hardship? Drama in the provinces? Who knows.

Anyone who lives in China should be aware that shit could happen at any time. Follow the news, follow websites like ECC so you have an idea of what's happening on the streets and if it looks like it's getting out of hand then get on a plane out.

There is nothing I can add to the advice from above me. I agree, they are 100% fucking cowards and will only fight you after they have summoned the squad to help them.

It has been steadily getting worse over the last five or six years, even the first few years here were a little dodgy sometimes (anyone remember the anti-jap riots?).

So, I will be out of here as soon as we can get going. In the meantime, I am keeping my head down, I rarely go out unless I have to. Fortuntely, Tier 2 is in a middle ground and we tend not to have too many of the extremes (stupid rich peasants trying to prove something, obxnoxious foreigners).

A hotel in the Chinese city of Shenzhen plans to charge its US guests an extra 25 percent amid a trade war between Beijing and Washington, according to the Global Times.

@RandomGuy would you mind walking in and fixing that 25% increase? After all you've got all the respect around you, remember?!

Even if it seems like special treatment to overseas students, Students should handle this situation better. But it's another example of things to come.

A college in eastern China has denied giving overseas students preferential treatment after its Chinese students staged a protest, claiming they had been forced to give up their rooms to foreigners and move to inferior accommodation.

The dispute erupted between education authorities and students of Wuxi Institute of Technology, a vocational school in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, over what the undergraduates said was an order to evict them from the best residence building to make way for overseas students, Thepaper.cn reported.

retiredinchina:

I had a friend teaching at a university and the Korean students lived in the same building with the foreign teachers, 2 to a room with a private bathroom, and the Chinese students 8 to a room and bathroom down the hall. They did pay 3000 rmb a semester more than the locals though.

Stay tuned to Fox news. They have the latest warnings for white people.

For example.... DO NOT GO TO LONDON....

They have a Muslim Mayor apparently. A brown person will stab you, or throw acid at your wife.

But seriously, this trade war is nothing. America will lose.

Trump is doing this for revenue to pay fotr his tax cuts.

The GOP had one agenda. One agena only.. tax cuts for the Koch brothers and their pals. That has been delivered. their one billion dollar investment in Cruz and Rubio has paid off, even thought they lost. Sinclair TV is winning, Murdoch is happy, the GOP are delighted because they can get back to transgender bathrooms, and Gods opinion on gay people.

Because, basically, the typical american evangelical republican politician cares more about where queer people piss than they care about world affairs.

If we consider hatred towards Americans because of American Foreign policy... Reagan. Iran Contra, Central America... Afghanistan proxy war.. thats where it all started. The CIA was the democratic God.

Bush Snr. OK. He saved Kuwait. Good stuff.

Clinton... bombed Yugoslavia, got a blow job.

Things are starting to go downhill. Ken Star is on the news more than slavic genocide. Rwanda happens. the UN are useless, the world concentrates on Clintons dick, and where it has been. My timing might be out here... Rwana 1994... clinton dick 97?

Me bad. My history is crap.

Then Bush.

Wow. Nice fella, but dumb as fuck.

I mean, really really dumb. He is dyslexic, but he is really fucking dumb. Confuses Shia with sunni, and goes to war with all. Lots of dead people, a few million perhaps, but he does the ice bucket challange, so the guy is cool.

Obama. Corporate democrat. bombs people with drones, kills Osama, tells good jokes, and wears a tan suit. a damp squib with a nobel peace prize.

Then Trump.

The sniggers start, reverberate, and echo. The whole world says FFS.

What a fucking joke. An absolute complete fucking joke of a president.

And Americans feel threatened in the world. No dude... We feel fucking sorry for you.

Come round anytime for a cup of tea.

These folks stack the courts and laws in their favor, and can easily bribe judges to ensure it's your fault, even if it isn't. Yes, they hit you while you're down, with very hard objects, as evidenced by these multiple dents in my skull that I still have.

Every time foreignland gets in the news, expat in the middle kingdom need to watch their backs.

I remember a Brit in Beijing was accused of raping a girl, and got beaten up by dozens of Chinese heroes. Weird photo of her holding his hand, may be legit, but usually rape victims don't want to touch their attackers, so my gut says setup/scam. Anyway, that time, my wife thought it was prudent to tell people abouit my Dutch nationality, not my Bitish.

Within days, video was shown on the news, of another Brit's angry verbal abuse to a woman on a train, and cleary provoked before the video footage started.

Some old white guy, Canadian or Ozzie was it? He threw a young girl back into the swimming pool. Was it a psychotic episode or more provoked stuff? Can't be sure. Anyway, that was old guys' cue to be low key for the time being, and people of his nationality needed to watch out.

The most disturbing, was an Italian guy who was victim of a granny accident scam. At first, he was shown in the media as calm and patient while this woman clutched his e-bike and claimed fake injury and damages. People supported the Italian in this.
Then some video of him hurling abuse at her in Chinese emerged, and he was in trouble. Everyone hated him.
Just after that, a clearly different video of a motorcycle collision was propped up as evidence that granny was not scamming him. I saw the footage, there were two adults and a bloody child on that bike. When people were confused, a young woman popped up to make a media statement, saying she was the GF of the Italian guy, and defying all logic, walked away and left him alone to deal with damage-claim-granny! And nobody thought it was a weird story. And nobady seemed to notice the child on the video footage, which GF didn't explain. Kid was hurled forward on impact, so there must have been at least some scrapes worth talking about..?
But, you see, a GF can magically pop up and ppl will believe it, but locals who knew the Italian guy would probably talk if a fake child was claimed to be his.

There has always been a willingness to hurt the foreigner, but with a cool head, a witness and preferably recordings, expats can still get by in hairy situations.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is 'Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by 1. Finding an employer; 2. Employer applies for an Invitation letter; 3. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
