I've heard of them happening, particularly in China where a Chinese person rings up and says their from the police or something, asks a whole stack of personal or financial questions (including passwords to accounts) and then making all their money disappear.
Well, I got a 2 phone calls within a minute today - both international calls - one from Seychelles, and the other from Pakistan (or so yahoo-gle tells me, from the country code).
And that quick search also told me it's a scam - based on reverse charges (and sometimes the other stuff... such as "you've just won the lottery").
Have you had these calls? Have you foolishly fallen for them? What about your Chinese partners?? (if you have more than one, obviously)

Not me, but a girl I worked with. It was a Chinese cell phone number though.
She got a series of calls from someone saying they were the police and demanding her bank details and saying she was required to go to... I don't know, somewhere to discuss how she was in the wrong. I happened to be there when she got one and she was saying it was strange that the police would be calling and asking questions like that.
I think if I hadn't said something she might have been scammed, or worse.

In China i would NEVER answer a call from an unidentified or blocked number.
Even at home I don't.
I rarely gave my number out to people - and always 'forgot it' when random strangers asked me for it. Some sleaze-bags tried to get it off people i knew, but i knew how to deal with them.........
Stiggs:
Me too, if the caller i.d doesn't give me a name I know to tell me who it is calling I usually don't answer.
Same with giving my number to strangers, I always 'forget' my number.
