Q: picking up the kids
i board a flight today for China.
my wife and kids are ready to come back with me.
i haven't seen them since June, but finaly everything is ready.
my oldest son is just two, but he really missed me a lot. my youngest learned to walk and talk in my absence. actually, my absence probably triggered him to start trying, because he made his first attempts at both back in June, a week after I left.
we're going to have some fun at disneyland, then it's back on the plane to our new home. the kids will probably cry again, because we need to leave their grandma behind. hopefully she can join us in time. it might be strange that an expat wants his MIL to live with him, and she isn't low maintenance. but with two young kids, she's more help than hassle. plus, my wife can use the company.

in HK now. MIL got a group visa by mistake, so now they won't let her on the plane. i won't know if she could board until they arrive in 2 hours. aren't MILs just a hoot and a holler?
i have a suitcase full of gifts i planned to exchange with her suitcase full of my old things i had left behind in China. Now i might have to bring all the gifts home.

for sure, her cheap visa ended costing us more money. i just hope she could board.

Since I am almost a decade into the relationship with my wife, we have a child we are also working on a daily basis with the challenges it gives that someone will always be out of their home country, there will be a set of grandparents that don't get to see the children as much as the others etc.
We're working on next summer being in Scandinavia. I've told my MIL that she can come stay with us for as long as she wants. I see this as essential in making sure the kids have a relationship with their grandparents, as well as a way tocurbing any homesickness from my wifes side.

Apparrently, buying a connecting ticket from HK to Thailand lets you into the departure hall without a visa, at which point you can board a plane to HK since they don't check your visa after that. That's what MIL did, and she could exit HK airport without a hitch. Getting back also went smoothly; perhaps she said she missed her connecting flight or something. Who cares; they let her go back to where she came from.
We had SO many suitcases and 2 young kids. It's a miracle we managed to travel without major incident. The kids were in massive panic mode which was most agonizing during lift off and landing, because they must be secured with a seatbelt. Some lady on the Aeroflot flight cussed at me in Russian because my oldest son touched a hatch; just touched mind you, and I had already responded by taking him away from it.
Back in Europe, the family is getting used to the house, but without the MIL we have our hands full. My own mom visited, but she is too old to be very helpful. The kids still miss MIL, but they're cautiously accepting me and their new surroundings. What are the best chances of getting MIL a visa fast?

- Hire as 'employee' in my home business
I'm not sure if the last one is feasible, or if I'll be drowned in taxes and employment insurances...
