Q: Project Based Learning Ideas

I teach reading and writing to high school students. I really like doing project based learning with them. Can anyone give me some unique and fun ideas?

For example: When we study about overcoming adversities, I have them make their own inspirational posters about the topic and then I hang them on the walls of the school. We are just now completing narrative writing. Their project is to make a children's book, complete with illustrations. Some of the students have gotten really creative and developed pop-up books.

Our next topic deals with the Pay It Forward idea, based on the movie. But, any topic and ideas are welcomed. Thank you.

There's a Thai advert I've seen forwarded on facebook a few times that is quite touching and is sort of related. I have no idea what it's advertising (maybe just that small kindnesses here and there do affect people) but the message is pretty clear at the end.

From memory a normal working guy wakes up in a dingy flat and walks to work every day, and every day he passes a mother and young daughter begging on the street so gives them some money he probably can't really afford, he sees a thirsty plant in a pot and moves it under a leaking downpipe to give it water, I think he shares his lunch with a stray dog too.

One day he's walking to work as normal and sees the little girl in a school uniform - he help pay for her to go to school. He notices the tree has fruit on it thanks to him and I think he sees the dog with some puppies he has obviously been helping the mother dog feed without knowing it.

If you could find this clip on youtube or something similar - or show the kids the pay it forward movie - you could then have them make a comic type book showing people doing stuff like this and the end result where someone's life has been really impacted by the small acts of kindness. Have them use their imagination to think of ways good deeds can come back around to benefit them or others.

Stiggs:

Found the video clip, not quite the way I remembered it but it's a good lesson for kids I think.

Thank you. I have many of those commercials that I show the kids. They are great for discussions.

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
