Q: Shipping a large trunk out of China by boat : what's your experience ?
As part of my planning to leave China, I would like to hear about your personal experience : sending a large trunk of personal stuffs (books, clothes, household items, home computer), by boat. I would use boat shipping over plane shipping, because it's cheaper and there would be no hurry. It would be for a long ride, ie. Down Under.
* Which company did you use ?
* Did you have to pick your trunk in a port by yourself, or was it delivered at a specified address ?
* In which state your stuffs were after the journey ?
* How long did it take to reach destination (to have a rough idea, was it 6 months or 2 weeks) ?

I don't want the name of a company that does it : I can use google for this, no need for help. As explained in my post, I want to hear about the experience of people who *already* did such a thing. Moreover, I would rather hear from people who are not working for a shipping company, because it would be a conflict of interest ;)

So if you want to carry 50kg of books/clothes/items (on top of the 30 kg of "needed" crap me and my wife will carry with us), you carry that in the train and the subway with your strong little arms, and pay the excess weight fee when you register your luggage for the flight ?

As explained in my original post, it's *sea* shipping, and I wanted to hear about *actual* experience from people at this precise forum. I know how to use Google me too ;)
I did once try to ship a large trunk out of China but the elephant it was attached to wouldn't budge. The whole event turned out traumatic so, in the end, I gave up and sent my family a sculpted Buddha instead.
I mainly have experience sending "stuff" using normal post. The delivery is slow, the packages show up in horrible conditions. It is only usable for unbreakable things such as socks and old Nokia phones.
If it ends up in the hands of "La Poste" is probably not important, the important part is that it leaves China in the hands of anyone but China Post.
Sending from China to Europe has averaged 5 weeks or so, sending stuff the other way, the record has been 3 months....before the package was returned to sender with a stamp from Beijing post office.
A suggestion. Look into shipping to HK using EMS or SF and then from there onwards using something else.
