Q: Shitty job-I am so mad

The boss told that we have nothing to do on the weekend and should come to the office to get product trainning and hang out with colleagues. I was so mad to hear that and I refused in a polite way. Then he called us for having a product trainning on this Saturday as we are going to the exhibition soon. I made an excuse that my cousin will be visiting me on this Saturday and then the boss said: If you don't come to office on Saturday then never come(means you just leave my company). The whole sales team were so mad at him apprently. But on Saturday morning, we still came for training. The engineer kept giving us trainning and it went too long.I told the enginner to speed up so the whole sales team can off earlier but the enginner got so mad and called me being unqualified to be a manager. Then he said he commanded us to finish trainning in his way. We all know this engineer always waste time on trainning befor getting to the point related to our product. And he  said he would never gave us trainning again and if the boss asked him to give trainning and he said he would tell the boss to ask me. Apprently he was saying he was going to tell boss that it's my problem that he couldn't do training. This guy is boss’s friend too. He said he would consider of firing me if he has the company share. I went so mad at him after he said those shit. Then I told that I quit and don't care about this company anymore and throwed my bag heavily on the table. Then I was going to walk out the door, the sales in my team stopped me. Well, my team were really nice at that moment and asked me to stay as their manager. Because I am the only one in this company treat them like a human. Then the boss’s brother-in-law called me to his office. I told him that I was not happy for coming to product trainning on Saturday. He then blamed me for not come to office for product trainning with a positive attitude on Saturday that gave the team bad influence. I then also told him that I quit. This guy is only 26 and laid a job at my boss's company as a manager because they are relatives. He knows nothing about management.  I was in a shitty mood and left company with my sales team around 1pm. The boss told earlier that he wanted us to stay in the company for the whole day on Saturday. What the fuck? I am so fed up with this slavery with no basic human respect. Screw them. I did not quit officially as I did not tell the boss that I quit. But I guess the boss’s brother-in-law would tell boss about my attitude and the boss might fire me on Monday or until he found someone to replace me. I feel so fed up and now I just don't really care about that much to stay on this job or not.

Suggest you keep your CV ready to go and that you always be on the lookout for a better job.  Unfortunately I have heard so many Chinese people complain about work practices in China, seems a real shame.  I'm no social scientist, but I suspect it is something to do with the massive population.

Anyplace where an act like this (below) crosses a managers mind, let alone a place where he/she is free to act on it, has some serious cultural issues that need addressing.

I wish you the best Viki.

This is exactly why I am self-employed.

Having retarded, power-tripping bosses that know less than pretty much anyone in the office that only got the position because they of their guanxi, is a total nightmare.

Usually Chinese management think you are totally expendable, and if you cross them... they figure you can easily be replaced. Trust me, you already made the boss loss face... if he doesn't fire you on Monday, he is already planning it. You may as well start looking for somewhere else or start your own business.

I can't say you are going to find any better but if you find a Western company that better values your skills... you can get further. I knew this woman working in sales at a local Chinese run language training center. Tons of potential but her boss was a piece of crap, treated her poorly. I told her to leave and go somewhere else. She finally got the courage and went to Wall Street English under Western/Chinese (more Western structured) management. She is now a center director and seems very happy.

Viki87:

You are so right. I should look for a new job.

I just applied a few jobs pay more than 10K in western firms.

I just got fired. The whole sales team and the engineer walked me out of the office building and we hugged.

Two sales and the engineer told that they gonna quit next month. There are only 4 sales in the team.

The engineer told he didn't tell boss about the unhappiness happened on Saturday. It's boss's brother-in-law talked bad thing about me to the boss.

The boss never paid us on time. I got fired and I still didn't get my salary.

Englteachted:

I've always been told that there's someone Chinese people can call if their boss screws them. But the people who always tell me this are students, people working at their family's company or jobless leeches. Maybe that person is superman. Because as I've been told, this type of thing doesn't happen in China, there are laws to protect people.

I am sad now to become jobless at the end of the year. I should be more careful dealing relationship especially with boss's brother-in-law.

Brother in law....you should have known that wouldn't end well. im sure you will bounce back in the new year.

Don't worry about it, just take some time and prepare for a better job for next year.

Being jobless can be a blessing as it means you are open for the next opportunity. Obviously you were in the wrong place, the boss and his brother-in-law would have only made things much more difficult for you.

I hired a guy just finished university from the UK last year and I trained him for 2 monthes and half. The boss fired me and appointed him as the manager as he's getting along with boss's brother-in-law and everybody.

and this guy is less experienced obviously, it's his first real full time job. I just taught him on how to write email few days ago then today he's the new sales manager. Hilarious. He's obviously a newbie. Few days ago, he wrote an email saying: My boss Mr Xxx asked me to write you emailxxx I corrected his email to: My name is xxx, I am assisting my general manager Mr xxx to serve your inquiry regarding xxxx.

Yeah, that is the unfortunate truth about Chinese management... they tend to be very insecure, emotional and unqualified. It may be too difficult to find a job now because of the time of year... perhaps after chun jie it would be easier.

And it's ridiculous to appoint somone just has few monthes working experience as manager. That's very emotional and this guy even not qualified as a good sales because lack of experience, let along sales manager.

I didn't teach him enough to make him qualified. He's actually a nice guy but just not qualified because lack of experience. People work for years to be qualified to be manager. I just feel so mad that the boss replaced me with him.

But this guy is good at dealing office relationship with everybody. The boss and boss's brother-in-law like him very much. It's me hired this guy.

look on it as an opportunity to learn and grow more.

what lessons did you learn from this job that will make the next one better?

everyone has had jobs that suck, but have learnt more about how to deal with difficult situations and moved on.

Viki87:

What I learn from this job is being careful with whoever you are working with no matter in Chinese firm or foreign firm.

Try to think before say something at work for my own good. No everyone is open minded and can tolerate with my opinion.

man do chinese even know their own labor laws?

Do you actually know that you can sue him? He cannot fire you for this case. You need to have at least 2 warning letters and some position changes etc.

Believe me, I fired some people and ended up at the labor court and companies apparently always lose.

So if you story is true, just go to the labor court and tell them that you got fired without reason. Obviously you dont tell them that you quit. (without paper its not official anyways).

Viki87:

I been told that I need to spend money to sue him. And I've been told that Chineseclabour law is not strong enough to protect employee. The boss also has a private lawyer.

You don't need money to sue him! Go to the labour bureau and go through exactly what happened. Don't believe other workers when they say Chinese labour laws are not strong.

You wanna know the hard truth?

You played a power game when you refused to work on Saturday.

The engineer is in the company to train you. Me as an engineer myself can tell you that he most likely was not happy either. Your attitude towards him lead to your problem.

If you would have pulled that stunt with me I would have sent you out immediately.

Now you know the hard truth. You played a dangerous game and overplayed your position. The consequences are that you lost your job.

As everyone said learn from your mistake and next time show some decency because it is not only your time that is wasted in the training. The trainer also has no weekend.

Englteachted:

You must be Chinese thinking that the problem was the training and not the being forced to come in on your normal off hours, unpaid. (probably with only a few hours notice)

The engineer is unhappy which its true. But my team said its the engineer's fault to overplayed. But he told me he didn't tell boss about it, he told the boss's brother-in-law said this to the boss. The engineer told me he's going to quit before the spring festival because he has to ask salary everytime and told me boss treats him not well too. They are friends and seem like their friendship is over.

That's ridiculous you think that way.

Even the the engineer is unhappy. He can't say shit to me because I don't want to continue the long training.

I was defending my right.

Tomorrow I'll go get my salary in the office, thinking of doing revenge by hinting the boss that his newly appointed manager is actually going to quit next month. But not sure if I should do it.

@Engl:

I totally understand that the problem was not the training but the taking away off free time on short notice. My point was that the engineer had the same done to him. He is forced to do the training if he wants to or not.

Giving him a hard time for that and blaming him taking too long when he has a goal set by his supervisor is unjust.

I would be mad too if you take my weekend away but that is how it is most of the time unfortunately. I had to come on weekends as well before.

viki87. the best way is to not give away any future plans others who work there to your boss or ex boss Whomever will be quitting because of this that u work with dont need to give the avanced warning they are quitting. No boss needs to be warned ahead that a person is quitting. By telling or hinting to your ex boss someone else will be quitting in a short time will give your idiot ex boss time to replace whomever is quitting. U are making it easy for your ex boss to fire whomever is thinking of quitting or talking of doing it. The best lesson a boss has to learn is that when key top workers quit and leave his company without warnings his businesss or quality of business will suffer and take a dive. Some peope need to learn the hard way that u dont treat employees like dirt and there will be repercussions one way or the other. The less advanced info your ex boss has about if anyone else quitting is best that he finds out after they quit if they actually quit What if this new manager is just saying he is thinking of quitting then he dont quit? By u telling hinting to your ex boss the manager is thinking of qutitting he might get fired and its too late if he had decided not to quit after all.

Cub, you are so right. I shouldn't give warning that the new manager will quit. And right, he might be just saying, who knows. The boss is a piece of shit, he should be receiving shit to learn a lesson.

I applied some jobs in foreign firms after the arguement happened. There's no firm contacts me till I got fired. Now a foreign firm wrote me back for interview, also a big global company calls me for interview too. I also got hired by a Chinese company.

Here's the thing. I went to an interview in a big international firm.

It's not the position I like, the payment is so average. But I like the company and the products. They liked me in the interview and I did damn well with most of the difficult test. I felt like they want me.

If they want to hire me. Should I work for them? The only reason I may work for them is that I could apply relocation in this company's overseas office. But is there any good chance for this to happen? If I want to apply working for it's overseas office. Should I apply from it's Shanghai office or apply directly at it's overseas office?
