Q: Should I wait before renting an apartment?

My current school provides me with accommodation but I've grown tired of the proximity, lack of privacy and restrictions imposed on when I can come back at night. So I was thinking of moving out.

I've read somewhere that apartment prices have been going 'steadily' down for three consecutive months, but don't know how reliable that info really is. I live in Shenzhen btw.

If you wait too long you might miss your opportunity to get the best apartment available since other people are looking for apartments along with you. It's better to start searching now and if you find one that suits you and you feel comfortable about it just get it. If your having problems now and your not that comfortable than the best way is to solve those problems and this is one of your solutions that you can do.

If in your mind you could separate the actions of "searching" for an apartment from "actually renting" it then I suggest that you do not wait if you really want to move out.  Nothing wrong with checking available units, you may find one that suits you and try to negotiate a good price.

Things to consider are that probably with the present apartment you do also get free utilities and internet connection, maybe a home phone, and will not have to pay admin cost to building complex either.
If you move out of present location, yes, you will get more freedom in a way, and more privacy too, but it will have a cost, since now you will have to pay for many other things you do get for free, besides the rent money, of course.

And while rent amounts are always subject to negotiation, you should be aware of the need to pay a deposit, and rent in advance.  Some landlords will accept one month in advance, but many are moving towards a few months in advance.  What I see now typically is to pay the rent quarterly in my city.

Also, unless your chinese is good, you will have to pay for your won utilities, gas, water delivery, etc.

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
