If so, what sort? Flintlocks or pistols? AR 15s even?
If your answer is yes, should the concept of armed teachers be exported from the USA?
If your answer is no, why not? Only good ppl with guns can deal with bad ppl with guns.
I assume American police officers are selected much the same way as in other countries, part of the selection process being personality tests to ensure they are the type of people who can keep cool and disciplined in a crisis and put their extensive training into practice. This is important when dealing with something like a shooter in a crowded school.
Teachers aren't selected the same way and they don't have the training police do. I can see a well intentioned but terrified teacher wildly shooting across a crowded room (assuming he wasn't the first victim -being the armed teacher in the room seems like a good way to catch the first bullet in your back to me), trying to take out the shooter before he can kill more kids and maybe adding to the body count.
Is having an armed teacher there better than having nobody and waiting for the police or whoever to arrive? I don't know, possibly but it doesn't sound like any kind of solution to the problem, more like a hopeful attempt to minimize the damage.
It seems to me like people have decided that psychos will continue to be allowed easy access to guns, they will continue to be able to take them into schools and the best anyone can do is hope a teacher can stop them before they kill too many students.

It would have to a very select few and anonymous or it defeats the purpose of being a deterrent. Given our lack of privacy and left gun haters motives, the teacher could be outed by an internet search of gun permits demanded to be public by the left. How could he or she conceal and never have a student notice they have the gun and tell everybody on social media and text messages in the school.
Regardless of your position pro or con, I don't think it can be done as a deterrent, if you do have some privacy, the left will scream it's a police state tactic not to know who has the gun.
There is no answer legally to make it work in such a divided nation. Its hopeless.
Stiggs:
I don't think having armed people there is any sort of deterrent.
The people who shoot up public places must know they're never going to get away and I think that's usually the idea - suicide by cop, or kill as many people as you can then shoot yourself.
No, we'd be the first targets and if would be attackers made plans they'd already say to themselves "ok teacher firstly than the rest."
So noooooo way
How about putting armed security in schools instead?
ambivalentmace:
New York City has metal detectors for knives and guns at every entry exit point of the school. Long term, it's a better answer than putting the "human, emotional answer into the equation", one bad teacher with a gun could stop the whole program and the left would scream bloody murder. A short term answer with no long term solution. I don't read about knife and gun attacks in New York City,
Stiggs:
The thing with armed security is, let's say you have some guards walking around the school. They get a call, there's a dude with an AR15 in a classroom shooting people.
By the time they get to the classroom, go in like Rambo and kill the shooter with no mishaps, no deciding to wait for police backup etc ten kids and a teacher are dead. It could have been a lot more if it weren't for the guards but still, ten kids and a teacher are dead and the rest are traumatized as hell.
To me, that's not an acceptable solution to the problem. Stopping the shooter before he can kill more than eleven people isn't what the goal should be. The goal should be nobody shooting up public places.
hi2u:
Stiggs: you haven't really provided a solution. And not only would armed security respond much faster than a call to the police, they would make the shooter think twice about shooting up a school knowing they'll be shot dead on spot.
Stiggs:
Ok, fair comment.
I think most shooters know they'll be shot, and that's the point. Suicide and take some people with you.If they're not shot they spend their life in prison. Either way they must know they won't escape and they seem ok with that. So armed guards wouldn't deter that mentality and they probably wouldn't be able to stop shootings.
A solution? That's complicated because it seems like there's a culture growing around the mass shooting thing, then there's the gun culture where people won't accept any type of gun control, anyone and everyone should be able to buy guns, regardless of their mental state. The 2nd amendment and all that.
I reckon the options are...
1. Accept that shootings are going to happen and that's ok because the 2nd amendment must be preserved.
2. Turn schools and other public places into ultra secure venues with metal detectors, searches etc. Prisons basically, probably very intrusive and not exactly compatible with the land of the free idea.
3. Change gun laws to control who is able to buy guns.
Option 1 seems to be what they're going with for now.
hi2u:
I don't see what's wrong with option 2 in combination with armed security.
Stiggs:
Well it would be really expensive, and the way I understand it schools don't have enough money as it is. Teachers often buy their own markers and things.
I'd go with option 3 if it was my decision. It's not up to you or I though, it's America's problem.
hi2u:
Yes it would be expensive, but I don't think that's a reasonable excuse when many pay for ipads and digital whiteboards in every classroom.
Tazers.
ambivalentmace:
Reminds me of favorite expression "the beating will continue until morale improves".
The US 2nd amendment needs an update to modern times... Teachers should also have grenades, portable rocket launchers and landmines. To keep the children safe. As the founding fathers intended.
coineineagh:
A classroom without the ABC weapons is like the alphabet without letters.
A gun ban would work.
It works in other places.
ambivalentmace:
yes, there is a gun ban in Chicago, and nobody gets killed in Chicago, Hussein's library is in South Chicago, better known as "heaven on earth", everybody wants to live there. The kids are all geniuses because the average teacher makes 75000 dollars a year. Why can't every city be like Chicago?
ambivalentmace:
I gave you another up vote for the effort.
All kidding aside for a minute and based on my first hand, hands- on knowledge, the Parkland school is very lucky this guy never watched a You Tube video on how to unjam an AR15 or this could have been much worse, based on the slow response without a Jam or malfunction, the count could have hit 3 figures.
