Q: Sign of the Times,But is it a good thing?

Mobile phones are like drugs I feel people are addicted to there phones.my wife uses her phone pretty much all day.seems that the moblie ph is way more important.my son  was jumping on her and she got a little angry because she was on her mobile watching a movie.

it seems that the mobile phone takes over or comes before everything else.

lately I have been seeing the use of the mobile phone more and more, its kind of disturbing.everyone looks down and not at there surroundings.

I get we that we need to stay in touch with people.

what can be done about phone addiction?

love to hear your thoughts on this

Sad story yesterday in Qingdao, two twin girls, 8 years old at the beach, mom on the phone, bodies wash up on shore the next day. I always ask my students do they carry a laptop or desktop around with them or did their parents carry one everywhere when they were young. They reply "no", and then I say " a smartphone has more useful features than a computer did 10 years ago, so why do you carry a computer every where you go now, what changed". Famous blank stare. I think they should stop using the term "phone" completely for the name of the devices because that is the least used function on the device now, Good afternoon sir or madam, would you like to see the Apple Ipod proxy babysitter, friend, or secretary model. We also have the bankrupt Facebook model that is free when you agree that your camera and microphone will record 24 hours a day until the top goes on your coffin or you burn in a toasty furnace and if we go bankrupt, all data is given to your local wise government for historical purposes.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Even in Canada. 30 years ago you didn't talk to many times on the telephone to many people. Now it seems that the mobile phone has become a neccessity. Both for the good, and for the bad. I guess that depends on the user's personality and their self discipline. It has also become easier to hack and mine data.

I don't like how they're turning smart phones into a virtual wallet with everything linked to your bank acct and I.D. I think in the future this will only become more of a thing.

It seems to me that by allowing this you're giving the govt, your internet provider and god knows who else access to every aspect of your life. Where you go, what you buy, your bank acct details, your surfing history, emails, messages, photos, who you talk to, who your friends are, what you tell people in private, notes you write to yourself on your phone and whatever else the apps you use provide. May as well have a barcode on your wrist.

I don't trust any govt or big corporation with my info, seems like every month Facebook or google or someone has a privacy scandal or does something dodgy. Then there are the hackers and scammers.

In the smart phone's defense though, a what of what you describe Rob has been happening for years, just with a different gadget.

People are glued to the phone now instead of the TV, or the consol game, or the newspaper, the CD player, the book, the PC, the camera, the editing software, the daily planner etc that dominated our attention in the past because now it's all there on your phone. It really is a useful thing. The difference I think is socal media, that's new and is probably what 90% of the zombies walking and typing are doing.

I'm just glad I grew up before smart phones, or even cell phones were a thing. I feel like kids now are missing out on a lot, even if the video games are way cooler.

haha,, u should see when I tell them my Dad had one of the first car phones.  The thing took up the whole trunk, with a hanset up on the dashboard. He actually had to call the 'Mobile Operator' and she would place the call.  They would think they were on Star Trek if they could see an iPhone 10 today!

and about the question in the OP,,  the kids are hooked.  I can't see anything changing that.  I may be over-exagerrating a little bit....  I was on the Metro the other day and a group of teens spent the whole ride (40 minutes +/-) interacting with each other.  Joking around and talking to each other.   Even though usually on those Metro rides I see about  90% of the riders w/ their head in their phone, and the other 10% catching some shut-eye.

Nobody would have/use smart-phone,  if she/he would be smart enough ...

You know, my Nokia in red rocks. Even the battery is still good. Calls, text & buzzer.

Made (purchased) in HK for HK$110 in 2012, 'cause I am .... enough!

As Edgy said, its an opium of the masses.

And as Stiggs said, its dangerous.

But benefits are there. Track ppl, track their DD, their shared bikes, their spending. Good info to be sold to starbucks for where to open their next outlet. It means we get what we want in our locality, if you want a starbucks.

But there is a dark side. The stuff that security councils worldwide should be aware of.  #MarcoRubio. I like Marco. He seems to be the most outspoken on human rights abuses.

The company I work for is moving towards wechat groups to share information. Email is still king in the west, but wechat is taking over in China.

Because it is easier to set up a wechat group, write down test results on paper, take a photo and share with all. Much easier than finding a pc, logging in and putting the data into excell over a secure network.

So, given that wecahat is connected to a phone number that is connected to an ID and a bank account, is it safe for corporate secrets to be shared on it?

Oh look, says wechat monitor, Mr Chen who works for VW Shanghai has just posted results on a new car battery system. Who has a rich uncle at BYD?

hackers getting inside information for trades is a wet dream for the clever investors, they don't even know they were played.

Anybody remembers when teli came out ...? I was around shortly after the initiation ... and people still stare at the stupid box.

Smart phones aren't any different ... I don't want one ... similar as at the teli, when I preferred to watch cycles on the washing machine ...

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
