Q: Smoking cessation clinics/spas in SH or BJ?

I've been struggling with nicotine addiction since I was a teenager.  Been on Nicorette for about 10 years now and every so often, suffer a relapse and smoke up a storm before a guilty conscience/self-loathing kicks in.  It's a serious addiction and I need help.  Has anyone ever heard of an in-patient clinic or wellness spa in (preferably) Shanghai or Beijing that I can check into for a week or so - at a reasonable rate - and kick the habit?  Not interested in the 5-star luxury hotel spas (way too expensive & fancy-schmancy for me), but I also don't want to end up in some run-down, remote hospital with dirty bed sheets... You know: a place like Dr. Kellogg's, what, a hundred years ago?  Healthy diet, exercise, talk therapy, massage, hypnosis, whatever...

Anyway, any suggestions aside from "cold turkey" are greatly appreciated.  I need health care.  Thanks for any constructive suggestions!

Dear KKCC, I sympathize greatly with your plight.  Instead of a wellness clinic or something so expensive, if you are in Shanghai, please try the General Surgery of the Jiatong University Medical Center.  They are competent folk.

Look here for details about this medical center:  http://english.shsmu.edu.cn/default.php?mod=article&do=detail&tid=329539...

Once you are there, ask them to give you a prescription for varenicline.  To take varenicline, you must stop taking nicorette, the patch or whatever.  Even in China, varenicline is not available over the counter and you will need to procure it at the dispensary of a major medical center.  It is the latest medical development in the anti-smoking battle.  You will need to be medically monitored for the first 2 - 3 weeks somewhat closely, so whatever center you choose should be within either striking distance of your place of employment or your place of residence.

If you are diabetic, then you cannot take varenicline.  Additionally, if you have ever suffered from serious depression, prolonged anxiety attacks and the like, you will have to pass on this medicine too.  It is a serious medicine for someone who really wishes to take the cure.

All the best to you.

The nicotine substitution does not help quitting nicotine addiction, it just changes what you are using your money on. As 98... writes. Varenicline. Bought a pack 4 years ago after several attempts to stop, that brought nothing but a couple of months of feeling horribly from being week and starting again. Have not smoked since, it was a surprisingly easy way to stop, they should really add it to the drinking water....

You may want to google a bit about the side effects more than what is on the box. It is sold under different names depending on where in the world it is produced.

Some docs might also suggest something based on buproprion. as far as I am aware this is an older generation of "stop smoking drugs", don't get that

As always, don't take medical advice from strangers on the internet. Do your research, ask the professionals.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
