Rancid, revolting, putrid, vile, awful ..... Wait there, I ll go find a thesaurus so I can adequately describe how bad this drink tastes. Is it humanely possible to produce something that tastes worse? I wouldn't wish it upon my worse enemy.
most rice based alcohol I find deeply unpleasant. Sake is not much better. Anyone else been in a situation where they have had no choice but to drink it (in laws home, business)? Did you manage to keep your sick in? Is there a drink that tastes worse than baijiu?
The only thing worse than a glass of baijiu, is two glasses of baijiu.
I like it. But only the rice version.
There is another type, made fromm sorgham I think. That is vile.

If you like it, you need to go home, have a pint of T. You ve clearly been in China too long.
Baijiu can be horrible. There are some flavors and brands of Baijiu that is just god-damn rancid... like one kind of really shitty sweet/bitter brand... I forgot the name.
But there are a couple of decent ones. They are very hard to find. I have been in China for almost a decade and ran into three kinds.
1) A brand in southern China, distailled in Qingyuan. About 500 RMB a bottle. Was nice with a lemon kind of after taste that drowned out the crappy baijiu after taste.
2) Drank with some guy in Tianjin that mixed Maotai with Ginseng and some other stuff. Was really good.
3 This is my favorite. Found in Shanxi area, it is called Fen jiu... comes from Lin Fen. It costs about 250 RMB a bottle and goes down decently smooth.
Most baijiu is horrible. The only thing I have drank that is worse than baijiu was some shiity French beer called Provo/Promo or something. It was disgusting.
Baijiu is so awful. I cant even smell it without convulsing. But i dare to say there can be worse? Im honestly too scared to look. Has anybody tried Huang jiu ( yellow wine/ liquor)?
Probably but I haven't tried it yet.
I hate the taste, the smell and the way it lingers in your body the next morning which is the shame because I do like the baijiu buzz.
In Kenya, someone made me try beer mixed with Fanta. That was worse than baiju, but only by a hair.
Is Wu Liang Ye baiju? It's not bad in small doses. There's a faint note of pineapple, and it goes well with Szechuan food.
Nessquick:
actually, also some Germans like a lot beer mixed with sprite or fanta, it was weird for me while I was working as waiter, to devalue our great beer with some sweet beverage :D
The only thing worse than Baijiu is Chinese wine. Both taste vile, but the difference is that Baijiu has enough alcohol to numb your senses, so you won't feel eventually. Greatwall or Chengdu (or whatever "red wine" is churned out from a Chinese "winery) requires drinking an entire bottle to start to feel the effects. By that time, you sense palate has long commtited suicide.

There are some good ones, but it tends to be pot luck. One called "Ruby Cabenet" was quite drinkable and a reasonable price...
But the Chinese mix their red wine with 7up or tea....classy, eh?

Maybe a tall glass of Kerosene. That is all that I can think of that would be worse than Baijiu.
Anyone tried absinthe? I haven't, but heard it's nasty stuff.
BlightyMatt:
Absinthe is mental stuff, but can make some great cocktails. If you shoot it neat it makes your mouth go numb....
Turkish Raki. That's my choice. It smells and tastes like a medicine. Would never ever try it again.
depends on what you consider a drink. does any liquid in a glass count? then there are worse "drinks". they're not nearly as popular as baijiu.
i remember watching a TV show where the imperial court had to drink eunuch's urine as a 'cool drink' TCM antidote. they didn't seem to enjoy it so much.
diverdude1:
yeah, if we are talking about any 'drink', including non-alcoholic, well I had a shot of fresh cobra blood chased with a shot of fresh cobra bile. don't remember much about the taste though,,, pretty much like blood and piss.
*please don't ask how I know what blood and piss taste like
Tried the home brew moonshine baijiu?....I did, never again.
It was quite smooth...but crept up on me terribly!
I looked in the mirror the next day and had yellow bruises under both eyes!!!
That must be a warning shot from my liver!

Some Chinese liqueuers are far worse on the taste front, had a green thing that was truly vile...god knows what it was, i dread to think.
The first shot of baijiu tastes horrible. The second shot is not too bad. And the third is pretty good.

I have had only one baijiu night. When I was fresh off the boat I was taken to dinner by my company in the first few days here. Of course there was several bottles of baijiu at the dinner. I was so naive at that time.
To cut a long story short....I woke up on my sofa covered in blood and thought I must have murdered someone or something else happened. After staggering to the bathroom, I saw my nose was a mess. I had no idea what happened.
Cut to Monday morning. I arrive at work to a hail of backslaps and handshakes. Apparently, I drank a lot and walked into a stationary taxi nose first. I had been taken to the local emergency centre where comedy ensued and then delivered home by a colleague. I have no memory of this. The hangover lasted 2 days.
As I said, I have had only this one baijiu night. I also learned how the locals enjoy getting FOBs totally smashed for their entertainment. Lesson learned. Never again.
what are the effects of consuming 2 shots of baijiu at least 3 times a week?? which baijiu is good which is bad?
