Or can you just buy as much duty-free stuff as you like?

I don't know about a limit but when we moved here last year I thought about shipping over sofas and hi-fi gear only to find out there is a fairly high inmport tax of up to 30% of the new value. If the customs official cannot detrmine the original cost he will set it at what ever he thinks, so we didn't bother; sold it all in the UK and bought new here. Hope this helps a bit.
Yes, there are items taht will be taxed even if you bring them with you on a plane, others are tax free, but only if you are checked and discovered.
If you move your household items it is a different story. There are a lot of documents and permits to get PRIOR to sending your goods here, and limitations as what to bring. Nothing can be packed with, or made out of wood, if so, must be fumigated in a special way in a vacumm chamber, and a certificate to have done so attached. You also must make an inventory list IN DETAIL listing all items inside, and their original value when purchased. If you miss to list one item, and the box where it was pack is selected for ionspection, your whole move could be confiscated because you will be baccused of contraband. Liquor is taxed at 100% of value, electrical appliances and electronic toys are also taxed, no clothes are allowed on your move, etc.
Before you consider a move, you should consider selling there and buying new here. Unless items have great sentimental value. In general, it will end up cheaper and less headaches to do that.
You can legally bring in 5000 rmb worth of tax-free goods into Beijing Capital Airport. I did some research about it not so long ago because I was worried that I'd get my duty-free purchases confiscated or have to pay extra tax. You can also bring in two large cartons of cigarettes into Beijing in case you're wondering
