Not possible, 'cause you can apply for Work visa (Z) only at Chinese Embassy abroad, HK the best or in your home country.

Your Q on through the web ... answer is 'no':

How to apply

1.You may submit the application to the Visa Office of the Embassy or Consulate -General which holds consular jurisdiction over the state where you reside;

2.If you cannot come in person, you may entrust someone else or a travel/visa agent to drop off your application at the visa office of the Embassy or Consulate -General which holds consular jurisdiction over the state where you reside.

▲No appointment is required.

▲Mailed applications are not acceptable and will be refused.

You can do it..sort of. Everything you need can be done through the mail. All the embassy stuff and police checks, all this can be done while you're in china though agents and things like that in your home country or your home embassy in china. Once you get your passport back in the mail in china with the z visa in it. Just take a quick run to Hk and come back in. Done. Mind you, this process of using an agent to do everything is quite pricy. All this I know my good friend here did it. One thing is you may not even have to leave the country once you have the z visa...he did but he said he was not even sure if he had to. He did because once you come back in it gets put in their system so it would not raise any red flags when he applied for his residency permit.

Have a read:

Visa Postal Service in Chinese Embassy / Consulate - Hardly Available

Only a few embassies and consulates accept mailed visa applications, such as Chinese embassies in New Zealand and Micronesia. Before making the application, you need to check out on the website of the Chinese embassy or make a phone call to see whether it provides such services.

Visa Postal Service in CVASC - Feasible

In countries where CVASCs are available, applicants have a great chance to apply for China visa by mail, such as UK, Australia, Canada, and Germany.

As few embassies and consulates provide mail service, hereinafter the contents related to visa postal service only applies to the situation when you are applying from the CVASC.

How Far in Advance Should I Submit the Application?

Applying visa by mail takes longer time than applying on the spot, so you need to set about the process well in advance but not earlier than three months before your planned departure date. Usually it’s suggested to post the application SIX WEEKS in advance.

IMO, one should be present at Chinese Embassy to get Z visa stamp!

Express Chinese Visa Agency

Cost from US$ 240 to US$ 360.

Im not saying mail the application yourself, you mail your things to an agent, and they go to the embassy for you.All my visas have been done this way. I never once stepped foot in a chinese embassy in my home country. I've had work, family and tourist visa done this way. Its just cheaper to do it yourself. Some people live too far away from their embassy. Like I do, its 1200km to my chinese embassy...it would be crazy to expect people to go there in person.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
