Q: Vacation ideas in or around mainland china?

So im looking to go on a 3-week vacation after the Chinese new year. So I'm asking where people have gone that they enjoyed and tell about the experience. I've been to most countries in SE Asia and I am looking for more "off the beaten path"  type places. Like some lesser known places in China or neighboring countries.

I find when I search for places online I get the same run of the mill type shit....like Bangkok, Shanghai, Beijing, Manila blah blah blah.

Any ideas are welcome and thanks to you in advance for your input, except the regular trolls on here.

Singapore. Fantastic place.

Other than that, I have always fancied places along the Russian border, sounds very interesting.

Or even Nepal or Bhutan. I bet not many here have been to Bhutan.

I suppose it depends on how far off the beaten path you want to go. If it's just avoiding Bangkok, Manila etc that's easy.

What level of 'off the path' are you looking for?

For example, I personally like Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao in Thailand. Three islands close together, convenient  to get to and you can easily jump on a ferry and move between islands. They're nothing like Bangkok and once you're in the area you can decide which beach to go to depending on what you feel like doing and how much human contact you want.

You have the convenience of a tourism infrastructure so there are no hassles with lack of ATM machines or language problems, going places is easy and well organized, there is an abundance of great food for most tastes and the beaches are awesome. If you're looking for a place with a nightlife it's right there, if you're looking for quiet evenings on the beach with not many people that's right there too.

I like to go and have a decadent few nights drinking and eating then head to a quiet, undeveloped  place with no nightlife or crowds and lax out on the beach for the rest of my stay.

If you want to get further off the beaten path that's easy too. Indonesia or the Philippines spring to mind, you just need to choose your level of 'the path'.

Yeah, thanks for the response. By off the path I mean just something different. I've been to thailand quite a bit, I enjoy the whores, drugs and muay thai boxing and just the atmosphere of the place. I spend the most time in Bangkok or Pattaya city. I never been to the northern part of Thailand which could be fun. Im not much into drinking/partying scene anymore....I own a bar in china so that stuff gets old me now...I can do that shit anytime.I'm thinking more of a "unique" kind of vacation...and im not into laying around on a beach either....unless its on a all-inclusive resort.

I got a pretty nice professional camera a few months ago and wanted to go maybe to a nice scenery type place.Japan seems like it could be nice this time of year, I only been to Tokyo and only for a weekend. So i never got o see much. I went to Kunming and Lijiang last year and had a good time. I dont know...im just dont know what to do...Just looking for ideas...

Then decide what you want to take pictures of and research it from there.

In my opinion pretty much any capital city or 'famous place' sucks.

Cambodia, Laos. I especially recommend Cambodia (the capital city) they use the dollar there which is great for me.

biggj123:

You know I was thinking Phnom Penh would be cool.Seems like a lot of nice scenery. I never been there so it could be something to do, I don't care about the money they use, that irrelevant to me. I do enjoy betting on cock fighting, that's always a good time. I was thinking maybe the Philippines and can do some good fishing while I was there since cock fighting pretty much everywhere around there...and you can charter a boat for the day and do some fishing....I have to decide soon though. I also never been to a sumo wrestling match before, I think that could be fun time if I went to Japan, I keep going back to the idea of Japan for my vacation...could be fun.

Bicycle across the Takla Makan.

*my dream goal before I broke my darn leg in 2014

biggj123:

I'm actually too cool to ride a bicycle for transportation...especially in some desert..I have a peloton in my apartment and thats all the biking..although horseback riding in Mongolia is something that I was thinking could be nice with nice scenery. Thanks for the idea though, I'm not big on deserts...I use to live in a snow desert for awhile and not to fond of barren places.

I have been contemplating Inner Mongolia. During New Years is probably not the best time, from my coworker from the region, quote "It's really cold. Really pretty. Really Cold". It loses something without the serious look on their face when say cold.

Holiday in Russia - you at least have a chance of avoiding the mass migration followed by closed businesses for the duration.

I went to Cambodia last year and then made my way to Vietnam last year. It was a great holiday. This year, I am headed to Laos/Thailand. Mongolia is on my list for a summer vacation.

I really had a great time in Cambodia. Ankor Wat was the best part of the trip. There is a unique, quiet museum nearby that features war materials found throughout the area. You get to actually hold them and inspect them, versus just peering at them through a glass panel. I also did the Killing Fields and the Detention Camps tours which was very educational. At the camp, they have some of the survivors from that horrid period are still alive and you get to talk with them.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
