Q: Western Music?

I'm wondering what kind of music chinese youth (teens, early twenties) and even those in their 30s and 40s listen to? Is it mostly Chinese artists/music styles? Do they listen to great western bands like Zeppelin, AC/DC, The Ramones, Dead Kennedies, Butthole Surfers? Or more recent artists like Coldplay, Muse, Cobra Starship, etc?

Justin Beiber or other things they are told to listen too. There is little individualism in China when it comes to music. Everywhere I go I hear the same songs and all Chinese love the same songs just because.

HugAPanda:

That makes sense. Wholesome music (justin Beiber - gack) for a country distilled in wholesome values. Thank goodness for ipods.

actually i was surprised by the variety of music my students like, everything from reggae to oldies (not the beatles or yesterday once more) the majority stick to the mainstream nonsense but i was surprised to find that many venture out to findout what else is out there

I found most people I ran into did not know western music. On the Li River raft the first song I played was The Ramones 'I Want To Be Sedated".I could tell what the women liked by just watching, Phil Collins, Hal and Oats etc. But they never heard of anything I had, not even Britney Spears. They seemed to know Michael Jackson who would be older than they were. I laughed one day while shopping when I heard a Chinese version of the Eagles "Take It Easy".On my way home I traded MP3 players with a girl who did know alot of western music, I got some Chinese music, she got Pet Shop Boys.

HugAPanda:

Ohh I love covers... a chinese version of an eagles' tune would be great to add in my collection. Ill have to see what other cool covers I can find :) Thanks

Younger people are into Lady Gaga, Justin Beiber, Taylor Swift, and Linkin Park. They like the popular music from the western world.

They like American music, and they also like Korean pop music. I hear a lot of the same songs playing over and over again, mostly "Nobody" by Wonder Girls. All the kids at my college know Super Junior and Dong Bang Shin Ki.
