I just try to google them and then surf the results to various sites.
travelchina.com forums have a bit of info as does virtual tourist but at times there is not much info about. I am trying to find information myself on some of the smaller cities because I would think there are so many wonderful places to see that are off the tourist path.

I've had the same trouble. The most up to date news I can find about my city is over 12 months old and the inevitable "there are no postings yada yada yada...." applied to each heading such as nightlife, restaurants, places of interest, etc. I noticed an advertisement in the classifieds asking for reporters from a number of different cities to write for this particular website so maybe the opportunity is there to become a roving reporter in your own city, submit articles, get paid and then everyone can read your opinion on the place in which you live.

Sadly they didn't ask for a reporter to provide info on my little village of 2.2 million so the rest of the world will remain uninformed. Exploring your city is limited to the confidence you have in getting around using the little language you know.
I think it all operates on a 'need to know' basis or an 'I don't care' attitude.

Here's your chance to become a pioneer!!
