One of my Chinese friends will get married soon. What kind of gifts are typically given here? Is there anything I shouldn't give?
How about some thing like lover's cup, bedside lamp, a bike, etc. You sould decide how much money you want to spend first.
I find that actual presents aren't that great or appreciated in China. It's best to give a hongbao with cash.
Complete fail-safes are expensive cigarettes (which won't actually set you back that much, especially compared to Western prices), or some baijiu. But don't go buying that cheap shit, get Maotai or Wuliangye.... it's somebody's wedding after all! And if you don't know which fags to get, just get the ones with the shiniest box... they're generally the most expensive.
I don’t know why we have this tradition in China, give Hongbao. I personally really don't like this. Money feels just too cold. I would love to give a gift, last long enough and usefully that my friends will always use and remember about our friendship.
Agree with Hongbao! You can just ask other people go together with you how much should be suitable.

When wedding, bring the big piggybank and make it ring, says the saying. Cash is your only option
i guess these day people give the money as they believe every one has their own taste of buying gift or product so the money is far option if not buy a watch for bride and for lady perfumes or other girls stiff can be fine . or you can buy a household product with giving hongbao for the couples.
