Q: What are some nice places in China to visit during Spring Festival?

I'm thinking about traveling domestically this Spring Festival. I'd like to go somewhere relatively warm, not too crowded, interesting and with clean air. I'm living way up in the Northeast so pretty much anything south of Beijing would qualify as warm for me. Two years ago I went to Shanghai for a week which was quite enjoyable and last year went to Thailand and enjoyed some fun in the sun. I've already been to Hong Kong and am looking for something new.

So any travel recommendations? Not really thrilled about going to Hainan due to the crowds - would rather go to SE Asia for that kind of scene. I've heard parts of Yunnan Province are nice all year around. I  would like to be outside of major cities for at least part of the trip to escape the crowds and pollution. Any suggestions? Guillin? Lijiang?

No offence but you must be mad! Both Guilin/Yangshuo & Lijiang will be swarming at spring festival. Plus how do you think you'll get there? Trains will sell out in the next couple of weeks (they're extending the advance booking to 60 days soon). You could fly but there'll be no discounts.

I believe you! I really don't know where to go that's the point...

Nice place to go in China during the spring festival?  There is no such place.  Either stay where you are or get the hell out!

I stay at home at spring festival. I enjoy going for walks around the industrial area I live and listening to the birds that I cant hear at any other time.

Its better to travel outside of China, you'll be stuff in all different types of traffic from people waiting in line to cars.

Both Lijiang and Guilin are nice, but Spring Festival is not the right time to go there.

South of Yunnan, Xishuangbanna, is nice, warm, with clean air. If you like a good mountain hike and minorities village lost in the hills, this is the place. The food there is fabulous ! Your main worry is reaching the place. You will have to reach Kunming, and the airport is going to be an hellish mess (it's small). Then you will have to reach a bus station (hellish too...), and hope to get a bus seat for the 8 to 10 hours ride. Kunming itself is enjoyable, for the melting pot, the food, and the relaxed pace of life. Do not even think about going to Lijiang or Dali at that time of the year.

Any first tier city, considering that most waidiren go back to their hometown the big cities are surprisingly livable during spring festival, no spitting, no big crowds. no peasants staring at foreigners, and so on. Pollution levels are often lower too.

dongbeiren:

I found that to be the case in Shanghai 2 years ago - really pleasant.

Eorthisio:

Shenzhen feels like a ghost town during spring festival and it's so great, 80% of the population doesn't have a local hukou and most go back home. Still everything is running (subway, buses, ...) and most shops are open.

you can go to qiandongnan(zhenyuan, kaili, liping ,sanjiang, rongjiang, then you can go to guilin.if you take train one or two days before cny then there is no problem since most people are back home already.

xishuangbanna is another good option, but better take plane from kunming to xishuangbanna instead of bus,it's too slow and uncomfortable.

"Hotwater" is right. Traveling during this time is brutal. Avoid it if you want to relax.

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
