Q: What century are you living in?

You can experience what life is/was like in at least three different centuries in China.  Many of China's new megacities have all the modern conveniences of a 21st century lifestyle.  While many smaller cities and countryside villages are still crawling out of the last century.  But if you travel around enough in China, especially to the more isolated western parts of the country, you can experience what life was like in the 1800s.  Arguably, you can find a bit of each of the last three centuries in many metropolises around China.  And despite the sheen of modern city life in China, maybe the manners, customs, and lifestyles of your neighbors make you think you're living in Qing times.

So what century do you feel exemplifies your experiences in China?

'' ... especially to the more isolated western parts of the country, you can experience what life was like in the 1800s.''

Tell me, please in which western parts of China have you been and experienced 19th Century ...?

I lived in Fukang and around Xinjiang and in the city on Guizhou/Sichuan border for one year or longer in each, and I didn't experience any of the two-centuries-ago treats.

Manners, customs and lifestyles don't differentiate much anywhere you go around China ... you can meet spitters, misophonics, yangists, 'my-car-has-right-way', WC squatters and similar in any of the Chinese metropoles same as in-Chinese-sticks.

Remember, Chinese travelling abroad is a recent novelty, so where they could learn about different western habits, politeness and ...

Are you looking for some 'China-is-Bad' feedback ... comments?

The government has not had time to tear down the culture, people's habits, buildings, sense of community in the western parts of China, but they are working at a feverish pace to do so. My hope is the whole country crashes and the money runs out before western china looks like Shanghai.

icnif77:

I disagree ... Chinese will move 100M people from countryside to the cities by the end of decade.

This is 'ad hoc' move comparable to West, where similar happened gradually in 100 years or so and 'farmers' had time to adjust to the city life.

I'd say, nothing will stop Chinese economy to flourish, because of backing in huge PM bullion reserves.

If one economy (West) prints fiat to the death, other economy (China) must do the same to acheive the balance.

I have a friend from somewhere near Beijing. Parents are farmers, small village of a few hundred people. They have cell phone coverage, as there are no nearby malls, taobao and the likes is how to fill their homes with crap. Their home has a kitchen with a wood burning stove, and to cater for the smoke, a hole in the roof. No hot water, electricity is not a thing thats too reliable. My friend didn't remember the year, but "fridge" has shown up inside the last 7-8 years.

My ex-GF from Anshan, Liaoning had/have parents living on outskirts and visiting her home every Sunday for hot water shower.
