They can mean the same, wealthy is having an abundance of something. Rich can be used to describe a sound or taste as well.

Wealthy means you only go to work three days a week. Rich means someone else goes for you entirely.

Rich can also be used as an adjective for food.

Let's use the two words in a sentence:

China is a wealthy country (meaning it has a lot of money), but the people of China generally are not rich (meaning most people do not have much money).

Hope that clarifies it a little.

Victoria1987:

Does it means wealthy is a general term.People who is wealthy may not be called rich, right?

Since you are Chinese, I am assuming that your question is related to money and material possessions. I am not a native English speaker, nor am I White with blonde hair and blue eyes, or look like a foreigner, so it'll be hard for me to get credibility in English language in front of the Chinese, but I'll give in a go anyway.

Being rich means having one or two sources of money that gives you a high income. Those sources would be defined as "work" or "jobs". You'd work hard to break through those sources, and they eventually allow you to earn much more than the average person, but you can lose those sources at any time and have your income drastically diminish. Rich people can begin the process of becoming poor overnight.

Being wealthy means that you have multiple sources of high income that won't affect your finances if one of those sources fails or if you take unsuccessful risks. It can also mean that you have only one main source, but that source would give you endless links to streams of high income. To stay wealthy, you wouldn't need to worry about getting and keeping a high paid job as a guarantee. Wealthy people don't have the word "poor" in their vocabulary.

Rich people work for their money, albeit a lot of it, if they stop working they stop earning.

Wealthy people have their money work for them, the money still comes in whether they work or not.

Rich people - Madonna, David Beckham

Wealthy people - Donald Trump, British Royalty,

TedBayer's answer is the best.  They can mean the same.   But rich has a broader meaning that can spread to all our senses, (this food tastes rich, that speaker has a rich sound, that clothing had a rich feel) whereas wealthy usually is only used as a means to describe someone's financial status.

edit: Well off means they have a very comfortable life, financially speaking. Keep in mind, all of these terms are subjective. What one person considers rich might be just "well off" to another.

Wrong. You are clearly lacking in wealth of knowledge,

I hope a native English speaker can answer my question.None of the above answers help:(

Traveler:

You've been given several satisfactory answers, by native speakers well versed in English. Now you're just wasting people's time.

In English, many words can have the same meaning. The ridiculous Chinese concept of one word, one meaning doesn't apply to most languages. For example, Eskimos have 50 words for snow.

You have limited English, so accept he answers which are relevant to your English level. When you have higher English skills, you will understand the subtle differences, but for now, your skills obviously aren't high enough.
