Q: What is the end game?

What is the advantage of China's behavior on the world stage? How does making enemies, making allies of Philippines and Vietnam, and in generally annoying the world serve anybody?

There are three schools of thought

1) This is to satisfy the nationalist demands of the hawkish elements of the Chinese people

2) This is to further some territorial ambitions but why go so slowly? Why not just attack now and be done with it?

3) This is to distract the people from a real more serious domestic unrest or issue.

So which one is it? Or is it something else?

I would agree with the third. There are so many problems here that the party constantly need to divert attention and what better way to do it than invoke nationalistic pride against those nasty foreigners over some bullshit dispute. Fortunately for them most people here do not have the ability to think any further on an issue other than what the glorious party tells them.

1) Of course. Why not satisfy a demand.

2) This is how Chinese operate. Like kids: push and push and push a little further everytime. Test the limits, secure what you grabbed, then keep pushing. Until someone gets pissed.

3) Of course. Everyone does that, why not them.

xinyuren:

Yes, definitely #2.  Antiquated thinking.  I believe they truly believe this is the way to expand peacefully.  As one Chinese official said, 'Our country is bigger than yours'.

Number 3, they always ramp up the anti-foreigner sentiment around this time. Summers are notorious for civil unrest. And China is slowly destabilizing.

There is a 4th option. The oil rig that was moved to Vietnamese waters was moved there by a company, not the state. The general thought is that the party is in strict control over all SOEs, but maybe they are not. Maybe this is just lust for profit from an ignorant company leader.

Sinobear:

Not by a company...we had Hulk harnessed up and he doggie-paddled the bitch into place.

# 5   Pure  unadulterated stupidity.

I really believe even top Chinese government has no idea why everyone is getting pissed at them. And it infuriates them to no end that the whole world doesnt agree that the Chinese own everything.  HAVENT THEY SEEN THE MAP????

liantohusin:

i can confirm they don't give a shit. I'm a chinese indonesian and so is my family, but even the elderly people in my family all claim that all of it belong to the china according to "teh old map"

Why do you say the world is pissed at China?  I disagree. Most countries of the world are kissing up to them and courting their FDI money abroad.  Australia had doubled their business with them in the last five years and Canada wants to double their JVs in China by 2015.  Russia just signed a 400 billion dollar trade deal with China and OPEC will even sell them oil in renminbi.  Where do you see anyone other than America "pissed with China"?

xinyuren:

Vietnam, Phillipines, Japan, Malaysia.... basically all the countries that are affected by China's vision of the S.China Sea are miffed with China's expansion tactics.  Read the news sometime.

I gotta admit, China pulled a good one over the west with oil and gas. While the west was putting sanctions in place over what's going on in The Ukraine, China jumped over the back fence with a bag of cash and grabbed Russian energy for themselves.
