Q: What happened to this place?

Been a long time since I've visited this site and it seems to have changed a lot, it used to be busy and chatty, a fun site to visit of an evening. When did the forum change? No more notifications when someone answers your comment on a thread, in fact questions in general seem to have fallen off a great deal, now it's mostly practical stuff about visas and work placements and stuff. What gives with the great leap backwards?

I think admin may have been Chinese all along, I remember a question asked by admin once (just looked it up to refresh my memory) that was worded, "How to spend your weekend?" I even remember him/her getting snotty when I remarked on it. It's not like I care though, it's just that I've corrected a hundred students on that mistake and never heard a native speaker make it.

Yeah, admin is def. Chinese. It was one Native speaker a month ago or so, before site was offline hard, and we lost all history (which was retrieved later).

I commented 'Your tits are big.....' on Engld post, where he was saying 'Fuk off' (written in proper Englo), and my comment was harmonized with 'not being on topic' warning, and his whole reply is still on.

Site was full of older pesters a month ago anytime of the day. Look now, there's nobody left anymore.

In the time I've been on the forum there has NEVER been notifications on answers to comments, only answers to questions.

mArtiAn:

Jesus, really? Is this how it happens? Is this how I finally lose all bearings on reality, because I swear I remember making comments and being notified on someone replying to them? Threads within threads. I'm totally confused now. So absolutely nothing has changed to the format of this forum? Really? Fuck. I've quit drinking Chinese brandy since I last spent time on this site, that may be the answer right there, but I am honestly, seriously confused right now. Jeez, what's next, I'm gonna lose it completely and finish every sentence with some nonsensical exclamation of lunacy like some gibbering nut tweaking his nose and saying wibble. I'd better go and check I do actually have a wife and two children asleep in the next room and that I'm actually living and working in the people's republic of China, and then sit down and do some serious thinking about my life wibble.

If you wrote the Answer, you get notified. If you merely commented within someone else's answer, you don't. Personally, I'd prefer it if we got notified about both, because coming back to discussions you are having on other people's Answers can be a hassle. They often get forgotten, or you don't even know about an interesting response to your comment.

The answer is quite simple: You have been so very long in China that reality no longer seems the same... like to the rest of the Chines people. LOL

That's a possibilitibblewibble.

A lot of the good posters seem to have left or aren't around much anymore ( mike, robk, drmonkey, scotsalan, samsara) and haven't really been replaced. Also too much of the site revolves around trolls like Vicky, cub and cftu crap.

expatlife26:

Yeah I agree. Signal to noise ratio is getting low. I think Rob and Mike both had kids recently so figure their downtime is now full and I know Dr monkey moved back to France.

It sucks that visa questions have to be a hot topic for CFTU guy to attack businesses on because it's a legitimate topic that a lotta people might worry about.

But in practice any question about a visa usually turns out to be scam propaganda. Cub was just a weirdo and vicky never has anything interesting to say.

I've noticed the last few weeks especially have been really quiet. A part of it may be that it's the time of the year where a lot of  people are off traveling somewhere.

A month or 2 ago the site went down, and when it came back all the conversations from the previous 2 weeks were deleted. They eventually got those conversations back, but it's been very quite since then. I think a lot of people lost confidence in the site.

Stiggs:

I wonder if people are feeling less willing to say stuff online lately.

I'm probably being paranoid but I feel like the mood in China is changing, and expressing your opinions isn't always a good idea.

Cub, I wasn't really referring to other posters here, but you do have a point.

New posters here are often looked on with suspicion. I don't think it's % 100  unjustified because a lot of the new accounts are pretty obvious in their trolling but I do admit, I think some people who are mostly genuine are put off,or scared away by the suspicion and insinuations.

stiggs, u nailed it again! Now when i posted this question to your question i am one of the ones this happened to! No, its not because i said neg things but because the very first post i had on this site i was accused of being a spy and or working for EC or i was a troll or i was a chinese paid informant for the government And profanity along with being called a liar! Now this was from my first post! After that i wont be insulted or personally atttacked and stay quiet slink and cower in a corner taking this! And all these accusations are assumptions no proof no evidence! Wait i will prove this! But u gave a good answer!

It doesn't help when new posters admit they ask 'test' questions that are obviously loaded and looking for a reaction.

I have commented previously that this discourages genuine responses and new posters joining. Poor/nonexistent moderation also plays a part, and recently it seemed that one of the many Admins on-site was also posting baited questions.

The response i got from ECC was that they essentially didn't care about the content of the posts - just foot-fall.

So this of course discourages real help and newcomers, and so on and so forth.

Over the last 6 months there have been a number of questions where more details were requested - normal questions to help get a clearer picture of a problem as the posts were vague or partial. When there was no follow up, of course people are going to become less willing to trust the veracity of a newbie.

One admin even deleted a question he/she posted when i asked for some direct feed-back.

i drop in occasionally now because there was more 'butt-hurt' than actual useful/interesting information than before

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
