I think it is, perhaps, reputation and...ignorance. We were at a friends wedding one day, and were seated with a lot of "company people," many of whom I had never met before. Of course I was a topic of interest, with many of the usual questions, like, "How long you been in China," etc.

After being here for a few years, I'm pretty laid back about the whole thing, and I do have somewhat of a personality. Anyway, towards the end of the dinner (and many glasses of baiju later), one guy tells my wife something, and points towards me. She says to me, "He wants me to tell you he wishes the American government was as nice as you!"

Of course, I smiled and said, "thanks," but talk about a loaded statement, made by a guy who has probably never visited another place, and delivered with the safe assurance in his mind that his government was "all that and more."

As I said, reputation (my country's) and ignorance (his) made me cringe that day.

kchur:

They do that to me too, even if they know I'm Canadian. I even know this Greek guy they do it to. The weird thing is, they seem to expect that you'll pull your phone out, hit the speed dial, and say, "Hey, old friend meirihan chairman Obama, this guy is upset about you policy disagreements and your harming of China. Could you just do whatever the Chinese say from now on, old pal?"

When the friendly neighborhood cabbie decides to ask me how much I make after he knows I'm from Canada and have been here over 1 year.
Do people here have no discretion?
And yes I have been asked by many people if I have a big penis.  Men and women.

There's two cringeworthy, yet continually repeated questions, and they're kind of related.

The first is 'when are you going to get married!?' (my partner and I are not engaged!)

The second is 'you two are so perfect, how can I be like that with my (future) girlfriend/boyfriend???' Now, in fact neither of us are perfect and even if we were, there's no magic formula! Having to explain this is awkward as arse.

Yeah, I think "when are you going to have a baby?" is one and "do you want to lose weight?" is another.

@giadrosich I think that's hilarious!!

Every year, when the US sells weapons to a particular island neaby, some of my students "demand" an explanation. As if I had any say in the matter. Anyway, I always answer "dont ask me, that is between Washington and Beijing".

"Don't you miss your family?" ... no, in fact, I'm very glad to be a few thousand miles away from them. Never bothered me not talking to them when I was only a suburb or so away from them either...

"Where's your wife?"... Never had one, don't see the need to, either...

"Don't you want children?" .. HELL NO! I like quietness in my life!
