Q: What is there for an animal lover to do in China?

Don't want to go to the zoo, don't want to go to a nature preserve, all for the obvious reasons... and as much as I think it's a good idea, I can't bear the tragic sight of suffering animals at a shelter and don't really want to go there (too sad).

So what is there left to do? Have cute pictures on my computer wallpaper? Go work part-time in a pet store?

Don't work at the pet store. If there is any place you will see animal suffering then it is there.

Last time I was in a pet store in China a couple of very big questions arose

Me: Do you vaccinate your pets (pointing at a small puppy)

Woman: Yes they are all vaccinated.

Me: What against?

Woman: I have to ask, but against all the normal things:

....intermission

Woman: You cannot touch the animals

Me: Why is that?

Woman: Because you might get them sick

Me talking to the dog: Does this woman know what vaccinations does or did she lie about pricking you with a needle.

This particular pet store was in a cluster of pet stores. They had fully grown Labradors standing in cages just large enough for them to almost stand up. Lots of small puppies hardly moving, many dogs have had their tails and or ears cut.

If you want to do something good for animals like cats or dogs. Try going to a vet (here you will also be shocked in some cases) We use a vet where the main vet is a middle aged woman who seems to genuinely like animals. They have a couple of young guys who also handle the animals well (think they are trainees) They have dogs and cats living in their office. Homeless animals they've taken in and taken care of. If you can find such a place, go there and ask your question.

And whenever you see an arse kick his dog because he has failed to train it to do what he wants it to do. Go yell at him until he stats crying.

What's there for an animal lover to do? I don't know, i've never tried it. But they've got a lot of chickens.

Scandinavian:

To make love to your chicken you have to cross the street, and we know how difficult that is in China.

I'm in the same predicament as you. If you are in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou or Shenzhen you could try here http://www.doctorsbeckandstone.com/ They may be able to give you some advice. There is also an adoption centre in Beijing ran by an American guy. Little Adoption Shop I think it's called. Smile

maybe buy your own pet if your situation allows it.

if you wanna help pets you can be a volunteer for and international animal association or you can just donate some money

if you wanna be around with pets or something you can maybe ask some of the better pet shops (that dont look like a shitty place of cages) and ask if you can take pets out for a walk (for free)
