12 years 16 weeks ago in Transport & Travel - China
A common mistake nowdays by many is to relay on websites to get a good deal on an airline ticket. Unknown to many, ticket prices are based on a number of reasons, like season, near festivity days, day of the week you choose to travel, time of day of flight, lenght of stay, etc. Also unknown by many is the fact that international routes are where most airlines do make money, they are really the profit making routes for them.
A travel agent worth its money will know all of this, and could help you save a ton of money on international travel if you have flexible dates and are willing to hear their advise. I grant you that some travel agents are just there to sell you a ticket, but many others are willing to really give you good service if approached with the right questions, and you are not in a hurry.
My latest experience along these lines was last week. I went to the local travel agency and told them I wanted to fly to Guangzhou (round trip) for a 5 days trip around middle of February. Not international, but still valid as an example. I did not mind a fixrd date, nor the time of the flights, what I wanted was the cheapest price possible. It took them maybe 1/2 hour of checking, but they found me a routing for 775 Rmb round trip which is 150 Rmb higher that by train on a soft sleeper, and beats 13 hours on a train.
It may not always work for you, but do your home work, find out on a website how much is the trip you desire worth, then see a travel agent and ask him/her to get you a better deal. Many times by a small change of dates or flight times, the travel agent could get you a cheaper fare.
Great answer Happy
try the airlines themselfs as the price can vary from what country you buy the ticket. ( yeah I know it sounds stupid but it's true.
also as Happy said play them off against each other.
some travel agents in AUS will beat a price by about 10% to get a deal.
as for web sites Best Flights are not bad.
I could get a flight from Brisbane to Harbin in June come back July for
$712 AU including taxes.with southen China but need to be flexable on your travel times you can save heaps.
Good luck
