Q: What's the big deal about the American ambassador in China?

I don't get it. We're reading back home all these stories about the Chinese being impressed with the new Asian-American ambassador to China because he was carrying a backpack and buying a coffee with his daughter. Huh?

Well, since America is going through the most unstable economic situation in its history, it is nice to see that even the elites at the top of the political hierarchy act like regular people during such troubled times. Everyone would expect him to have an assistant to do mundane chores for him like get a coffee, and people are shocked that he doesn't have some Louise Vuitton leather briefcase but an affordable backpack. It makes him seem more "real", more in tune with us common folk. It's refreshing to see.

It is quite easy, he is a success story, that of a Chinese person rising to power in the US. Iam sure that the US media machine might have a feild day, if a US citizen was elevated to Chinese ambassador to the US.

@ philwilliams.cn

He is not a Chinese person. He is an American person of Chinese heritage. He is not a Chinese citizen. It is nothing like an American citizen being elevated to Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. You need to get your self in gear. Americans are Americans. Chinese are Chinese. Gary Locke is an American.

Hi skin... Of course the locals go on the band wagon "he's Chinese" but they don't get... it's his heritage but not who he is... he's American... Also the fact he's an official who doesn't act like a douche bag, the locals likely haven't EVER seen anyone like that before... Yah western leaders do their own shit... SURPRISE! They don't drive $800000 cars (plural) or have 20 houses and 1000 bank accounts either... And of course put tons of shit in their families names to avoid looking bad... When they do... They get caught and punished quite quickly (transparency) They were going to discloses all the assets of the CPC members a few years ago... NEVER happened (anyone surprised) the guy in charge said something along the lines that is was more difficult than anticipated due to China's unique system (corruption is unique now!)

Yah... philwilliams... The difference is that will never happen in fact it is against the law... That's the difference between "free" men and "the other guys" hence my aggressive behavior towards western retards that forget where we are (not implying you're a western retard, just to say in general)... He's an American with Chinese heritage (of Chinese decent)not a Chinese who became an ambassador.

He does it again!

Gary Locke continues his outrageous behaviour! Flight attendant reveals he flew Chengdu-Beijing on economy class. The attendant writes, "Yesterday, Ambassador Gary Locke flew back to Beijing on our flight. Not only did he reject attempts by our ground staff to give him special VIP treatment, he also rejected an upgrade to first class as well as the coach on arrival. In economy class, Locke remained polite and unassuming throughout the entire journey, while another customer in first class began making demands as soon as he boarded the flight. What a stark difference."

I'm pretty sure this guy is doing it on purpose as part of a PR movie against guanxi, corruption, etc...he's putting the Chinese people on his side by acting diametrically counter to how Chinese officials do. It's clever...real clever.
