I've seen so many apartments without shower curtains or doors. Some of the really nice places have them but the majority don't. It just seems impractical to have to mop the floor after every shower when you could spend 300-400 yuan and install a shower curtain and an edging on the shower floor.
A lot of bathrooms don't even have a separate space for a shower, it just comes out of the wall. To me this is impractical because everything gets wet every time you want a shower. My bathroom is very small, so it really bothers me.
I was happy to have a western toilet, but the shower is the bathroom, kinda not practical, have to sqeegy and mop the bathroom after a shower. This is Chinese design, I'm sure some day it will occur to me how brilliant it is , maybe because I have to wash the floor everyday.
When I was looking for an apartment I tried to get one with a normal seperated bathroom but in the end I had to settle on the all in one....I hate it...always having to squeegie after every shower.
But on the upside my shower is so close to my toilet I can use it like a bidet after a nasty crap....good times.
I have, so far, not seen a plastic shower curtain installed anywhere in China, and that does not mean it could be (or could not be) a few out there.
But I do have seen a shower area within a bathroom enclosed in glass, which is exactly for the same purpose. Those are mostly in homes of Chinese who has been abroad, or in the homes of some foreigners married to Chinese. Quite nice.
I do know of a local Chinese Lady who owns her apartment, very nicely decorated. In her bathroom (which is quite large, by the way), I was surprised to see a western and a chinese toilet, a bidet also, and in one corner, a glass enclosure with a nice shower head out of the wall and an edge on the floor. She also has a wooden bathtub, but no shower curtain on it. He bathroom is huge by Chinese standards, must be about 10 feet by 12 feet at least.
Must be where you live because everyplace I've lived or even so 5 star hotels that I've been to all had shower doors and some had curtains.

Shouldn't be surprising at all to see a 5 star hotel with a shower curtain or enclosed shower.. And if you stay in 5 star hotels, perhaps the places you stay in are pricier as well. My first long term stay here was in a pretty nice place in the Wu. One bathroom had a tub/shower with curtain, and the other had a shower enclosed in glass.
Cheaper places usually have the ones OP is talking about. I definitely prefer the separate ones, but I don't mind the other ones too much. And I don't mop after I shower, just leave it and it'll dry by itself.
I have seen the glass enclosed shower stalls in a few homes but strangely enough, they were all used for storage. Stocked full of boxes and random junk. I have had people tell me they would rather go to the public showers than shower in the comfort of their own homes. I don't get that at all.
its true that in apartments of 2000-3000rmb pm range, its hard to find shower curtain/seperate shower... but anything above that should mostly have it... just go to a norma supermarket and checkout the bathroom ulilities area... plenty designs of shower curtains available.... means plenty ppl are buying that.. have a look specialised supermarkets for home fittings... plenty shower cabinets.. very expensive ones... but some very very cheap as well... just few thousand to install... some are very small size.. may be you could buy a low quality cabinet and install!!

Hey I pay 3500 outside the city for what would be considered luxery here...2 bedrooms all the furniture and fixings exclusive gated comminuity on top of a giant shopping complex and 2 years old...but small bathroom with the shower in front of the toilet (western). In the city (Shenzhen) a place like this and with a seperated bathroom would be about 10k.
In my girlfriends previous apartment there was a prebuilt all in one modular bath shower in the bathroom. Where we live now the bathroom is smaller so it would not fit, nor will the washing machine so it's out with the mop to wipe the floor. She gets her new apartment later in the year and as it is new we will fit it out ourselves. There will be a small glass stall with a hob in one corner.
My school provided us with a brand new western style apartment with a separate shower. It is the only one I have ever seen in China and I love it! But we are moving in a few weeks and our new place doesn't have it and the bathroom is so small we can't put a separate shower in so I'm sad. I am thinking of at least installing a shower curtain, but most of the floor will still get wet anyway so...*le sigh*
Not sure why my reply was deleted. I said the Chinese are cheap arseholes. Ive lived places with shower rails but no curtains! Whats that about. And if you took the curtain with you when you left, then why not your grotty shower rail?
