Do Chinese people just not like open kitchens? Every apartment's kitchen seems to be separate room, makes cooking and entertaining at the same time a pain.
It is that way (since there is no hood exhaust) so fumes, smoke, smells from cooking, and grease do not spread all over the apartment. Remember here in China, rooms or apartments are rather small.
smoke is a big issue i guess. but actually i know people who have that kitchen style even back home... some way to keep the smell out of your house, i like it actually.
Try seasoning a wok in an open kitchen without setting off the fire alarms and making your whole house reek.
As long as the kitchen is not close to the bathroom. The thing is with the closed kitchen it has to deal with the smoke yes. Also, I agree some apartments are small. Our kitchen has a sliding door that prevents you from hearing loud noises such as when we are watching a t.v. show in the living room.
