I've been through the same angst about buying guitars in China. I got a sweet strat with custom shop 69s for an excellent price in the mainland.
As mentioned above, a trip to Hong Kong is well worth it and the tax saving will pay for the trip. Hk has some great shops.
If you are not going to HK then i would suggest you do a little googling and find out who the Authorised Dealers are. Of course you could buy in usa or Australia (free trade) and have it shipped.
Funny I just bought a Fender and a Gibson this month.
I'd been playing a fake Rickenbacker for a few months, just to see if fakes were really that bad. Goddamn does it feel good to play real instruments again.
I got the Fender (Jaguar bass, 3900yuan) by searching local 2nd hand listings on Taobao. Great deal, AMAZING, hugely versatile instrument. The serial number shows it is from the first ever production run of Jag basses in 2005. Someone offered to buy it from me on the second day that I had it.. I could have made a few thousand yuan, but absolutely NO WAY! This baby is a keeper for sure xx
I ordered my Gibby (Deluxe SG Bass, 4800 including intl. delivery) from Ishibashi music in Japan. It's a 2003 model made in Nashville and still has its original hard case, also a really lovely instrument and decent value, and different enough (shortscale, old-school mudbucker thumps) from my Fender to justify having both.
Ishibashi Music has a branch in SH I believe, so I'd suggest you look them up (they have a taobao shop too). You'd never get fobbed off with a fake from them. I'd recommend searching their stocks in Japan too, they have hundreds and hundreds of Gibsons. Intl. delivery is around 600 Yuan and you skip Japanese domestic sales tax (which is around the same as the shipping cost).
