I want to buy bread, and not this fluffy white stuff they sell everywhere. Anyone know a bakery or any place that sells not factory produced European style bread?
Tous les Jours, Maiquer bakery or BreadTalk. I live in the Chaoyang district and we have Tous les Jours/Bread Talk but near DongSiShitiao you would find the Maiquer.
Hope this helps!
I personally believe that April Gourmet (and sometimes Jenny Lou's) have better bread options than Tous Les Jours and BreadTalk. The baguettes and croissants in particular are much more authentic tasting... and there are no tricky/weird fillings to surprise you.
I have never been to Maiquer bakery however.
The bread at The South German Bakery on Lucky Street is good too. They have regular white bread, sour dough and many other good bread types. German bread is totally undervalued in general. I would argue that the Germans bake bread just as good as the French. I may even go so far as saying that Germany makes the best sour dough bread in the world. http://www.germanbakery.com.cn/
Jenny Lou's bread is okay too for the price. Comptoirs de France is also great but very, very pricey. It is however one of the most authentic French bakeries in the city. Both places mentioned above have a branch in Lido.
Gosh, if there's something the Chinese completely suck at ---
it's bread.
Believe it or not, and trust me on this...... 7-11.
7-11 white bread in china is so good I'd even buy it at home. Let me know the result.
Try Breadtalk they have some excellent bread there. You can choose different types of bread that is really tasty. Other than that some of the Japanese markets have bread and also Walmart has a wide variety of some delicious tasting bread.
Try Russian convenience stores in Dongzhimen, BHG Supermarket (dark bread, pretty good), or local convenience stores for a brand called Wekipedia (LOL), their bread is one of the best I had, especially dark rolls with different seeds.
For French-type baguettes, some like them, some don't, try RT Mart, Carrefour, Metro. They are mass market but the baguettes are usually quite fresh, crisp and not very expensive (maybe 3 RMB each).
OK, if you want real French quality bread, with the prices to match, please try here. It is French-owned, French-run and has been around for three years.
