Sign up with Google Sign up with FacebookQ: where do all the expats live?
I've been here for a little over a week now and though I am told my area in guanzhou has a lot of expats I don't see them.... Went to a bar for the first time last night and I saw some greasy looking middle aged european men- nope don't want to be friends with them. Where do all the young cosmopolitan expats hang out?! And are there any community groups/ clubs anyone's organised for us?
Where do they live or go hang out? It won't matter where they live if there is nothing to do in your area they will go somewhere else. If your looking for young cosmopolitan expats you will be able to find a lot at shopping malls. As far as community groups it depends on what you like to do. I had started a chess club and had some people come out to play. If your into sports you should check the gyms. If you like reading go to a book store or a library.
In Guangzhou, there are lots of expats. Most of them are in 1 of 3 places. Downtown (around the Garden Hotel), in Zhu Zhang New City or in Panyu.
If you are downtown, try Paddy Field bar/restaurant, it is located behind the Garden Hotel. If you are in Zhu Zhang, try McCulley's or The Brew.
If you are in Panyu, try The Tavern located near the Chime Long Zoo.
You can find a list of events going on here: http://www.gzstuff.com/events
Also, if you like running/hiking/drinking beer, you can try attending the local Hash House Harriers group. They meet every Saturday afternoon downtown at the Golden Mango bar, then take a bus to a running site then they have a group dinner afterwards. Lots of fun, good people and cold beer. Their website is http://www.gzh3.net
Hope that helps a little. Guangzhou is a great place.
I don't know the answer but I just had to comment on something else...
The "thumbs down troll" has been hitting this thread hard.
Watch them drill this comment next.
Thanks XpatJohn!
Will look into those websites. I am indeed loving Guangzhou 4weeks and counting
I am about to move to Haizhu (sp?) just across the river from Yuexiu, and though I have been there only a few times, I think I'm gonna love it- found a gym and a spa there- happy times ))))))))))))))))))))))))
Oh and I think I'm the only Black female there so if you see one in this area smiling at you it's probably me. PLS SMILE BACK The Chinese don't like to smile back at me for some reason....
Xpat.John:
Glad you found the info useful. Guangzhou is my favorite place in China. I have a home out in Panyu, but for the last couple of years I have been living in Wuhan. Panyu is nice for me since I lead a pretty quiet married life. If I was single, downtown would be the place I would want to live.
Being a black lady in Guangzhou will present you with some additional social hurdles. There is a large Nigerian presence in Guangzhou and they do not have a very good reputation.
I hope someday soon to move back to Guangzhou. And if I see your smiling face, I will be sure to smile back. Have a great time!
I know, but, as one of those referred to as Greasy, middle aged European (Ageist, racist Greasist) I am disinclined to answer
As for your comment about Europeans and I am no means racist against blacks, have you ever considered how greasy you are in the minds of the Chinese and your in a country who will be biast against you just for being black even if you're from and English speaking country. I would choose your words a little more wisely
