Q: Which people do you find are ruder: expats or locals?

Everything...attitude, manners, annoying, self-righteous etc......

People have the potential to be equally cool or annoying no matter where they are from.  Personally I think it's an even match when I add it all up and adjust for percent of interactions I have with each.

I totally concur with DaBen. Maybe, sometimes we feel the Chinese are ruder but I think that is because our cultural sensibility is not familiar with their manners. However, I have to confess that in my experience, the Chinese in Hong Kong are more friendly and easy going than many of their mainland’s counterparts.

expats hands down.  ive never met so many arogant, self righteous bunch of a-holes in a single place.

nevermind:

What amazes me are the ones who don't speak the language well then get mad when locals screw up their dinner order or something.

Locals are more rude and from a Western point of view have worse manners BUT they have not been brought up with a culture that expects and respects manners and politeness. Westerners have and so it is more of an annoyance to me when they (and many do) forget what I think is important because they are in a country that has less expectation on them to behave correctly. as far as self righteous goes the Western people who have this attitude are right up there in the dickhead dept.

In terms of flat out rude I'd say locals. But, what we consider rude, they don't, so you gotta cut them some slack.

I've had Chinese people who I've never seen before grab my arm and scream, in my ear, "Why are you ocean ghosts so stupid?" And laughing their asses off.

Chinese, no question.

Like "cracker". It would be like me, in Canada, grabbing a Chinese pedestrian and saying "Why are you chinks all so stupid??" And bursting out into laughter. Could you imagine, in this day and age?
