Q: Who is by your side?

So you the foreigner get into trouble in China.
Your taken away for questioning.
Who will stand by you and go to bat to get you freed?
Your Embassy will send someone....well after some time as they might not be told for a while.
But how about your Chinese family?
Will they move heaven and earth to help you or just except you are gone and move on with their life?

You are completely on your own if anything happens.  Don't expect help from anyone.

I bet, they (your Chinese family) won't move and risked to be disappeared, too.

I would think more about my Embassy as the only help possible.

Western decoupling from China will be bad ... for laowai in China. Thinking about, you're not looking Han and strolling through the Chinese city ...

'accept' not 'except'  ... one Grammar nazi told me ...

I can tell you from personal experience, the only help you will get from your embassy will be late, perfunctory and from the ambivalent lout who drew the short straw and is eager to get back to the special ktv.

It might not be that bleak ... but even only with the feeling 'laowai-bad', you can't really enjoy China ... and living there.

One has to have an exit strategy ...

yes exit is right, when the democrats and left turn on china and both parties are pissed, it's going to get ugly in a hurry. the ccp has lost all logic and is grasping for the last breath of air.

I've known, or known of - a few people who have gotten themselves in the shite, usually through them being dickheads but not always.

One guy landed in the shit with the police quite deeply through no real fault of his own, he got into - and won - a fight.

He could have avoided the situation IMO but he didn't actually do anything to provoke it.

The little w@nker who started the fight was from a well connected family so what started as a simple matter of the police listening to the foreign guy's story and basically telling him 'meh, you should really have just walked away but it's on the other guy who started throwing punches and it serves him right' turned into a nightmare for him, the other guy's family took it to friends in high places.

The foreign guy's employer, his girlfriend and a Chinese friend did what they could to help him but there was nothing they could really do, like most things in China it came down to who knows who. He ended up having to do a midnight run and left the country.

Another guy I knew ( but not well so I never got the full story, just heard it through the grapevine) got himself into at least two pretty serious situations - both times assaulting other people - and was bailed out by his inlaws both times. He could probably have done prison time if the inlaws weren't able to pull strings.

No two situations will be the same obviously but I wouldn't assume that just because family or whoever do nothing it's because they don't want to, it's just not that easy sometimes.

Moral of the story is do your best to keep out of trouble because there's no way of knowing who will be there to help you or who is even able to help you.

@Stiggs
Seen a lot of footage of foreigners lately being arrested and harrassed by police..only crime is the colour of their skin....China is getting like the old south

Stiggs:

You're talking about the Africans getting hassled? That's not new, China has always been a tough place if your skin is darker.

Sandnose:

It's fake news. Party officials announced that they have zero tolerance to discrimination and everyone is treated equally. They even trotted out a couple of tin pot dictators and banana republicans from Africa (who were later seen with Ferraris and supermodels at a 'special KTV) to confirm there is nothing to this story other than the manipulation of the facts by those filthy western devils. Yeah!

Do you know why Chinese avoid sun? Women especially ...

'cause Han person with darker, tanned skin most likely works outdoors (farmer, road maintenance ...) and is considered poorer ...

In public transportation, Chinese will always pull the curtain over the windows ... except when I have sit by the window ... he he.

That is also a reason, you will see Chinese girls with open umbrellas at sunny ...

BuTT ... I don't understand how that reflects to people with black or brown skin (Africans, Indians, Pakis), but they were throwing them out of the rented apartments .. and restaurants.

I pasted link somewhere ... See "Are Chinese Racist .." or something similar ... thread.
