Q: Why am I always asked the same question in China three times?

So, say I go over to some guy's house, and he offers me oranges. I say no thank you, but then five minutes later he offers them to me again. Then, not five minutes later, the question comes again: do you want oranges?

Just to be clear: these are the same oranges referred to throughout the conversation. A new batch of oranges have not appeared, or have disappeared from view to just reappear again.

When you are offered something, you are expected to accept, unless it is hongbao in which case you are expected to reject, and the giver keeps trying until you accept.

Try flipping the situation, offer fruit to your Chinese friends, they might say no, but then just keep going.

I think they think you are just trying to be polite by rejecting it.  They think you really want it but are afraid of appearing greedy and thereby losing face.
