I cannot stand the saccharine, heartless, trite, pop bullsh*t that gets churned out endlessly in China.
I cannot understand why so many people enjoy it!
There's not much variation in Chinese music - it seems to be either pop shite or the godawful unintelligible screeching of Peking Opera.
WHY DAMMIT!?!

Hey Ludovico
The reason why you mainly hear the very saccharine chinese pop music is mainly because as far as i know the radio stations and other media have a policy of mainly playing this kind of music. Actually China produces a lot of good rock and electronica, this however has a pretty hard time getting on the airwaves.
These bands mainly promotes their music through live gigs, festivals and their blogs where fans normally can listen and download the music for free. If you want to get a better impression of Chinese music try to catch some of the increasingly popular music festivals in the bigger cities. In beijing i know of midi, strawberry as very good rock festivals, while the intro festival in beijings 798 art districts is very much worth checking out for fans of techno and electronica.
hope you can explore more of the alternative music scene in Beijing
because chinese people are soulless ???? isn't it ?
No, Chinese people aren't inherently soulless. They copied it off the Japanese.
There seem to be a lot of things you can't stand about China Ludovico. Why don't you just leave then and stop pestering everyone with your stupid questions.
Actually, its the same s***t all over the world, but I must agree.
In some ways its sometimes overwhelming how icky-sticky-sickening/soulless? the songs are.. Anyways, its like Anders says, its lots and lots of good music around, you just need to look a little deeper for it!
Soulless music is what sells so that's what they keep making. That said, I've found a good number of songs I like here. There's so much music in China that you're bound to find something you like.
Like pop music from the West is all meaningful? Yeah right. Pop music is meant to sound fun, the meaning of the lyrics isn't as important. Considering that I can't understand what they're singing, as long as it sounds good to me, I will like it. I love Korean pop, and some Chinese pop. Japanese pop is worse than either of them, in my opinion. I think some Chinese pop sounds good.
Agree with Anders, if you want good music anywhere, you have to dig. You won't find it on the airwaves, that's ruled by masses (masses being 12 year olds and parents of 12 year olds trying to please their 12 year olds). American pop music (the kind easily accessible on the radio) sucks too.
That's your opinion! I personally like some of the music and I also have listened to some Cantonese music that I like as well. I rather listen to music without words sometimes...I think listening to different types of music may help you get a little bit of that soul that your looking for back. If you can go on youtube look up Chinese Traditional Music and then tell me if you think it's soulless after that. I can't understand the music but I listen to it or like to hear it anyways its better than nothing. imo.
I only listen to the souless pop cause it's ironic.
