Q: Why do people always bring small gifts when they see each other?

It's always rather small, but they always do. I honestly feel stressed sometimes because I don't know if I should bring something. Even for such things as seeing each other over lunch after not having done anything for a month, they'll bring things.

Why is it such a necessity?

Well i think if you go visit someone... then they will provide you food, take care of you etc... spends money .. time ... so if you bring some gift.. they would be happy..

I like china wedding function etc.. its similar... you spend money.. then everyone who comes .. gives you red bag.. then its like you didnt spend anything... and you feel very happy.. (actually you have to give back the same amount when you go to others wedding.)

Because it is the custom here.  And gifts are not given in odd numbers, or four.  Always even numbers.  Your best bet is to buy apples, bananas, oranges or tangerines, whichever you can find first.  You should bring enough for the number of persons present.
