Q: Why is prostitution so rampant in China?
For something that is officially illegal it it is ridiculous.
Who really benefits from this?
Maybe it's the city I am in but really...it's almost as bad as Bangkok...under the surface but out in the open at the same time.
Has this become like the futile war on drugs led by America? Prohibition?
At what point do they just give up? Or have they already.. with the exception of the odd sensational national story of a crackdown to appease the masses?
Mate.......This is the Wild Wild East.....No more talking about this...................What do you expect from a country that is full of issues?!!!!..........Health insurance?!!!!.......Free Education?!!!!..........The symptoms of a state issue are three.....Drugs....Prostituation and corruption.People can't even afford drugs so that is off the list but still it do exist.............prostituation is competitive here to bangkok.....corruption is the thing i won't be starting talking about here.............End of Story
At face value everyone appears to win on this one, the customers get what they want, the prostitutes earn money, the madam's / pimps earn money, the police earn money, and the local government officials earn money or get free sex. Win - win, unless of course you're a prostitute not through free will but dire personal circumstances.
My opinion on this is the same world-wide, legalise it, regulate it, monitor health and cleanliness, and in so doing minimise the access to the profits of organised crime and make profit for the government. Of course where there is so much corruption that is not likely to happen but it works in Holland and Germany.

I believe there is still a big problem with trafficking in Germany and The Netherlands.
I know there is in Denmark, who has almost the same law as Germany and NL.

I feel that anything that gets rid of the pimp or the madam is good. I saw way too many cases where the pimp gets 90% of the money made by the prostitute, and she is the one who is often times in mortal danger from enraged custumers , disease and arrest.
Duh... maybe because it is so cheap and the selection is outstanding? Just my guess of course!
My GF did makeup and might make 2000RMB a month, some months she had no work. A hooker might make that in a night.
I was amazed at how many women are involved in the sex industry. The hotels all have parlours, the sex stores, KTVs. Most of the women that lived in the apartments around where I lived were sex workers, most of the little apartments in alleys also. Many women will just do it once in awhile for some extra cash.
Before I left, the cops were driving by and closing all the doors on sex shops at night and then 10 minutes later, the stores opened again. I think this just meant it was time for pay offs.
I been to more than sixty countries of the world, prostitution is everywhere in the world even in developed world and especially in USA and if you compare the population of China and USA the ratio of prostitution is less in China than USA.

I'm not sure if I had an unusual experience in China. Where I lived the streets around me were sex shops ( beauty shops), the apartments were full of sex workers. When I was out late at night for street food, I'd meet tons of sexy good looking women. They all worked KTV or parlours. Most of the women I met were full or part time sex workers. I often wondered if almost every good looking woman in China wasn't for sale at some point. Older women I met were touts for everything. I was friends with many of these women. I told them I was sad to see them doing this, and explained that if I used them I was taking advantage of them no matter how much I paid them. I did pay for some of them, but many just were with me because they liked me, maybe they had ulterior motives of their own. They all had stories why they do this, but mostly for money and they don't seem to mind. Their out look on sex isn't what I thought traditional Chinese were. Many of the women are married and yes the ones I knew, the husbands beat them, but not to force the into it or to get money. They just fought, or he was a drunk. Women that work regular jobs will sometimes work in a sex store for extra money.
One woman I was friends with was a mother in a sex shop. I was joking and asked her if she could sell me.The women liked me. But I can't sell what I have, maybe to other guys. It's just how the world is. We'll do anything to get our hands on women. As a men we crave women. I know there is abuse on hookers, but what if they crave men. It's not completely terrible for them and they can say no to anyone they want.
I remember a cartoon, a little boy showing his penis to a girl saying look what I have and you don't have one. The girl pulled up her shirt and said yes, but with one of these I can get all of those I want.
