And provide more info. Be specific.
ScotsAlan:
Something somthing ping.. wet something bottle. West somthing bottle? I have no idea. Is the head of State a bottle? Is he a genie in a bottle? Why do you ask such difficult questions dude? Why not have a go at answering some questions instead of asking stupid stuff.
Congratulations on your first post and welcome to China......however, regarding the topic.......
some say many (most?) Chinese people idolize lighter skin color. That is, the lighter the skin color the better. Some even say it is something to do with them wanting to be 'white'. Sounds a bit extreme, but who knows? I sometimes want to be someone that I am not also... anyway, this does seem to be the thing around here -
Lighter skin color: Good, Refined, Intelligent, Upper class
Darker skin color: Bad, Peasant, Unrefined
Yes.
So, we need to do something about it (however small), such as when a job is posted with a racial (not national) requirement, then we ought to comment on its racist BS! Shame them! Make them lose (even a tiny) bit of face.
But also remember - the vast majority of Chinese are incredibly ignorant about the world (and often, willfully so - they prefer to stay that way - it gives them a sense of security and stability). In their minds, there is China (all wise, loving, compassionate, strong and powerful Han), America (evil white democracy - but with nice phones, clothes, and basketball)... and Japan (evil bastards who should be destroyed!) Some also know of the Philippines (well, have heard of the Philippines.. all they really know is they are backward and uneducated - and should stay out of China's affairs). Oh, and there is Africa - where all black people come from - uneducated, uncivilised, and speak some sort of monkey language not even remotely related to anything intelligible - like Chinese or English.
That, in a nutshell, is the typical Chinese view of the world.
It's changing, don't worry! But it will take time, patience... and people who educate them. The younger generation is getting better - TV and internet are seeing to that, as well as the influx of foreigners to China.
Robk:
Well, this sure beats about 10 years ago.
It was like this...
China - Good and almighty!
Japan - Evil... as always!
Africa - Dirty and poor!
America - All white people come from here!
And that was pretty much it lol.
History.
Traditionally only peasants and workers had tan and brown skin because of hard work under the sun, the nobles and other members of high society mostly lived in palaces or mansions away from the sun.
Fair skin complexion is a symbol of status in China and most of East/Southeast Asia.
For the same reason men in China grow long nails. Back then peasants couldn't do this because they were always scratching the dirt.
Status, that's all. Nothing to do with White people. On contrary they tend to respect White people because they have fair skin complexions, and thus they must be rich, not the other way around.

@ random, for some reason most chinese have been taught and believe most american men are wealthy when in truth thats all based on a assumption!
Racism is only bad if you are the one being effected negatively by it.
It's quite good if you benefit from it!
Just get some whitening cream, and join the rest of us in Honkyville, Krackerstan. White power! Or was that powder? I forget. I'm off to the tanning beds.
Because ignorance takes a long time and a lot of effort to remedy.
And when you are a national of 10 year olds with temper tantrums and as stubborn to boot... it takes over 5000 years, apparently.
I have brown skin color too... But honestly I haven't really faced any issues with it
