Q: Will Chinese become the world's new 'worst tourists'?

With the flock of nouveaux riches gushing out of China, do you relish the prospect of sightseeing with a truckload of loud Chinese tourists (thereby reliving your times in China), or, worse, seeing your own country run over?

It's funny, a while ago I was returning home. We landed and started queuing for immigration, at which point three guys out of a batch of Chinese tourists begin cutting. One of the Americans right before me taps them on the shoulder and points to the back of the line. Was hilarious.

That is awesome.

Look at it this way, if travel abroad becomes a standard thing for Chinese, they may, as a nation, become more familiar with the concept of a queue. This mind blowing, earth shattering, insanely weird concept of standing in line may actually become something commonly seen here in China! On second thoughts.... naaaah, that's unlikely.

I have no problems with Chinese being tourists in my country. We've had Japanese and Korean tour busses clogging all the famous tourist sites for decades now, it's good for the economy!

The only thing making it a little difficult at present is obtaining a visa as far as Australia goes, but it is still far and away the biggest growth area in tourism. The problem is that to get a visa most people need to be part of a group and these groups are controlled by Chinese who siphon off large commissions from bogus shady traders who they invariably direct their groups to for shopping. If one had the wherewithal to start up a tourist business that showed  Chinese the real Australia and let them buy the souvenirs and presents, that they are so keen to purchase, at a fair price there would be a huge demand for that service I believe.

MissA:

I didn't know they had to be part of a tour. An ethical tour company that did real experience tourism for Chinese would be an absolutely wonderful idea. So much better than the normal tour group way of doing things "on the bus, off the bus, on the bus, off the bus, look at this cheap crap, haggle over the crap, buy the crap, back on the bus...

Honestly that's how my first trip to China was: a group tour, no time to explore, only going to areas with expensive things.

They don't HAVE to be part of a tour but for anyone Chinese (and many other countries as well) except the mega rich it is very difficult to get a tourist visa to Australia in other ways. This is due to the large numbers of people who enter Australia on tourist visas and then overstay. As far as I know even for a group it requires an extra surety to be lodged to get a visa. There are a lot of Chinese gyprockers, kitchen hands and sex workers in Aus who entered under tourist or student visas and remain illegally. Fortunately or unfortunately depending on you point of view we do not look upon all Chinese or Asian looking people as criminals nor do we pull them up in the street and demand their ID. I do happen to think though that our police and immigration officials are pretty dumb to be not able to capture and repatriate illegal immigrants through normal investigation and raids without compromising the rights of those who are doing things legally.

I won't put up with it. Now that I speak some Chinese I will have no problem telling them in their own language when they cross the line.

I predict many beatings in the future. First one to cut in line at a McDonalds where some hungry construction workers are waiting is gonna die.

Just got back from doing a sightseeing tour of Turpan (awesome place, btw), the Tuscany of Xinjiang. Hired a local guide for the day who said something rather interesting. He told me that the Chinese prefer 'new and fake' attractions, while the Europeans favour 'old and real'. A good example: beside the 800+ year old Buddha caves of Bezeklik there is a brand new visitor centre where contemporary fakes can be seen. Seemingly the Chinese tourists hardly ever visit the caves themselves.

If this is generally true then it should mean that the queues don't get any longer for the places I want to see.

woody:

Wow. Just checked it out and it does look like an great place to visit. Any chance that you could PM me or provide more detail on here. eg How you got there. What are the must see places. Where you found your local guide and how much they cost. How long would one need to spend there. Would really appreciate it.

Okay, I can't add a comment.

If you're going to Turpan, every hotel has maps of where to go. In the city itself is a 300 year old Minaret made of mud, it's really spectacular. On the other side of town (short taxi ride) is the ancient ruined city of Jiaohe, which is quite possibly one of the best places I've ever been. Imagine Luke Skywalker's home after an Empire attack. The place is huge and UNESCO protected.

Outside of the city are two collections of ancient Buddha caves, Bezeklik being the more intact in terms of frescos. The other one (Tuyugou) sits atop a traditional Uyghur mud village. Both well worth a visit.

Add onto this, Flaming Mountain, Turpan museum (for the mummies), grape valley an trying the local cuisine you're looking at two hectic days minimum. A taxi for the day should cost no more than 250RMB, plus lunch for the driver if you're feeling generous.

Jiahao is worth a whole day by itself.

Hope that helps, Woody.

woody:

Thanks. It is now on my list of places to visit. My list is getting bigger but this is up near the top now.

My sister works at Toronto airport, she thinks I'm crazy for coming here. She hates Chinese with a passion. She sees them as rude, they make her sick burping and farting at will and picking their orifices. She told me when a plane unloads you can smell the Chinese. She told me this long before I ever came here. She still feels the same way.

I just flew back to the US a couple days ago.  I got to see some sweet justice while waiting in the customs exit queue at LAX.  There were multiple lines in parallel feeding to the inspectors, and they would call you up from your line (any inspector could call you from any line).  Anyways, the inspector looks to me and says come on.  Before I can even take the first step, some Chinese dude from 2 lines over just sprints up to the guy.  WTF?  Obviously the customs guy wasn't even looking in his direction....but this guy's gonna go ahead and try his luck.  Custom's guy wasn't having any of that.  Got real nasty with him and told him to get his ass back in line.

Wow, I love being home

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
