Direct deposit is only available with Bank of China in Hong Kong, not the mainland for  most western retirement payments and most western countries don't issue checks anymore. This may change but given the current climate, financial transactions could be more of a pain in the ass in the future and not less.

A place to retire in China, that's tough, perhaps a high mountain with cut out terraces for growing food and below that several rings of land mines.

No, that's something I wouldn't even consider.

To be fair I don't know China that well but I really can't think of anywhere that could be called a happy and comfortable place to retire. At least for me,

well, I have done so in Fangcheng Gang, Guangxi Province,

Can get apartment for 5100 kuai sq meter including terminations, maybe further goodies too.  Real nice.  Located on South China Sea shoreline, 150,000 persons as population, about 50 Kms from Vietnam border.

Do have account at Bank of China in HKG, receive dollars, change to kuai, and use debit card here.

So far, after 7 years, very happy.

But, of course, you must like to live in China, not hate every second of your life here. With under $ 2,000 dollars per month, live like a king.

It's not a good choice for those who might require medical care.  Or either for people who like to do things.

Whilst true that restaurant fare and beer are relatively inexpensive, neither are really worth what you pay.

However, I'm still here.

whocaresreally:

retired americans could go to saipan for medical, not sure about other westerners, can you lymies and canucks get anything in aussie while your on this side of the world.

I think the main concern re medical care is for those things that require immediate attention.  And attention that is handled/managed in a competent manner.  And by utilizing methods that are modern and effective.

I'm pretty sure that my nearest reliable hospital is in Hong Kong.

Stiggs:

Medical care would be a big concern obviously, but for me leisure activities and lifestyle would be an even bigger consideration. The main consideration really.

When I retire I want to be able to do what I enjoy. Fishing, reading, watching movies, drinking good beer in the sun, walk on a beach, mess around on the internet, mess around in my garage learning to make furniture or something, enjoy the peace and quiet of a house rather than live in an apartment and listen to my neighbors scream at each other all the time, have a garden, have a dog and a cat, have nature close to me, not have to deal with crowds unless I choose to, BBQ in my yard, pursue new hobbies... I could go on and on.

China isn't a good place for someone like me to retire. Nothing really against the place, I have enjoyed my time here and best wishes to those who do choose to retire here, but I just don't understand it.

Oh, and the idea of getting sick or falling down the stairs and breaking my hip or something and having to drag myself to the street to get a taxi to the local hospital where the medical attention would be.... well it scares the hell out of me.

Troll season!

ScotsAlan:

So you suggest Norway as a seasonal retirement location?

Makes sense. Winter in South China, Summer in Norway.

We all have to run the gauntlet of regular posters I am afraid WHW. All new posters are suspected of being wumaos. I had to get over 100 posts before the Wumao stuff went. And now I get even more grief.

But trust me. It's worth hanging about and hitting back.

Your posts have been good.

Stick with it dude. Some people you will connect with. Some you won't. But on that day when you need your mega big rant, everyone will agree with you.

That's why we all stick around here. We all have one thing in common. We live in China, and through the hard times and the easy times, we can all understand what we are all going through.

Stick with it. ECC is worth the effort wink

@ScotsAlan, Thats very kind of you. Thanks, appreciate your encouraging words.

Since I joined, have been noticing exactly as you mentioned. Those clowns actually amuse me than bother. For all we know they could be wucents / wupennies (possible ?) trying to mask themselves by implying for others (and which better target than new users). Or they have a silly mind!

Thanks, again. Sure, I will be around. :-)

Oh and by the way Scots, WHW said the illogical clown is back , isn't that a personal attack? And you clearly read it. But you see I'm not a whiny cry baby. But what I see from the site is unfair treatment. Certain veteran posters are targeted while obvious trolls are given free reign.

Why do we have to have a discussion on open thread about harmonising? It's an admin's choice and all complains use to be in private.

But, because you openly told you are admin and poster, we have to have discussions was your action warranted or no. Who cares about your-admin's action?

It's house rule, and had never required an open discussion.

@IC, You say you already know, then why ask me ?

All you have done is whined and blamed, except answering the Q posted. Such illogical behaviour of yours is seen in several posts on forum. Guess, who's the obvious troll!

Your pic is ugly indeed. Pathetic. Cry a river for all we care.

If you had any culture you'd know the biggest free speech suppressors have always been leftards throughout history.

If you had any intelligence you'd understand most of what you probably stand for unless you are a complete psychopath belong to the "right". But leftist beliefs are created by psychopaths who understand how idiots think. Guess where you belong.

I'm curious - please back that up with some facts.

As well as the "leftists are psychopaths" comment.

(ps.  And it's not his 'culture' that would affect his thoughts, it'd be his education and  historical knowledge...!)

Both rightwingers and leftists can't accept hearing different viewpoints. There have been CEOs and teachers fired for supporting anti gay marriage groups. And lets not forget Hank Williams being fired from Monday night football over his conservative views.

I still have about 30 years to go before retiring, hope that medical care could improve in China by then. Kunming wouldn't be such a bad place for retiring actually. Good air quality, good weather, awesome traveling options within a short distance via bus or bullet train.

royceH:

If I was a free man I would be living somewhere in Yunnan.  I like it there.

Not that I don't like it here, just that four years is enough.  The longest I've ever lived anywhere previously in my life, except for once,  is less than three years.

I have been retired in Zhanjiang, Guangdong  for 4.5 years. Wifes hometown, keeps her happy. HAPPY WIFE:HAPPY LIFE.

1500 sq.ft, 3 bdrm, 2 bthrm, apt is 2700rmb plus parking and maintenance... 3000rmb.

get my cheques in my Canada account and just use an atm to get it to me. simpler and cheaper than any money transfers I know of. about $2000cdn per month is what I spend... beer and cigarettes included...

medical is an issue..  recently stopped paying for Canadian medical, they do not cover me here anyways... and confident can just go back if need be and re-instate it. had a few doctor and dentist visits and I just pay them....I'm satisfied and what I have paid them is a lot less than a monthly premium. I am 59...maybe when I am 80, I will consider insurance.

who do you think them guys are that all the financial bitching are in the USA and the world....INSURANCE, MEDICAL,, are certainly on the top of the list of rip-off artists.. Lawyers and antiquated laws are of course up there too. extravagance for a roof over your head ; who needs it? and I am only on my 3rd, 4 kuai beer today.

Oh yah, I splurged today, bought  a new pair of sandals and a pair of loafer things for about $75  ...  quality stuff I think/hope/believe........  last pair lasted me 5 years.

satellite TV, my biggest extravagance ... 300rmb/mo. .. internet is cheap and a very reliable resource for all world news..... truth is, I have nothing blocked in months and very satisfied with the stability, reliability of the vpn I use.... the speed is an issue, but I am retired, learning to live with slow ass flipping thing.
