I've had 2 situations where my Chinese wife was disrespected by airline staff at the check in. And I did not tolerate it at all
Strictly speaking of course that was unprofessional. The rift between HKers and mainlanders had been growing ever since the turn of the century. Initially mainland tourists were treated with equal respect not just by airport staff of HK but any other airport, ie no different than any other tourist from other countries.
Among ethnic chinese living all over the world there is this saying regarding face / reputation / respect --- Face, people give you. Losing face, you do it yourself. That said, this saying may not be among the locals any more since mainlanders committed cultural suicide during the cultural revolution, they hadn't much left anyway as practically all China's bests, scholars, writers, business people fled china way before that when CCP grabbed China. The cultural revolution wiped out what's left, meaning prc was nothing but a garbbage bin.
Mainland tourists as a group has lost whatever respect they had in virtually every country they visit these days due to their nastiness wherever they go, bringing all their prc habits and worse, those nasty hidden rules like bribing, or me-cult, or me-king-you -slave, imposing them upon citizens of other countries, thinking in their twisted psyche that is equavalent to invading and conquering other countries. Who in other countries can put up with that? They only have themselves to blame.
This article does a pretty good analysis of the situation in my opinion. You need a vpn to read it though.

You know who treats mainland tourists the best these days? The answer may surprise you, the Japanese. A senior friend of mine who is gifted with photographic memory and also exceptional analytical abilities, who also is trotting the globe whenever he can take a week or two off running a flatout work schedule, goes to Japan slightly before christmas of 2016 for vacation. He comes back with this observation.
He said, 'you really have to salute the Japanese for their customer service'. I said, 'what's so surprising, who doesn't know their customer services ranks number one in the world? I myself can testify that with plenty of personal experiences'.
He said, 'you know how they receive those mainlanders from china? You reaaaallllllyyyyy can't spot a shred of disgust or disrespect unless you observe extremely carefully. Everything is so perfect, you can only,in a split nanoseconds, a look of scorn and distaste, and it is gone'.
Thumbs up to the Japanese, I for one would give them that.
Of course, you have to protect your wife doesn't matter where.
Did you scream at air staff? They are all beauties, but wife is wife!

The one that I saw clearly disrespect my wife, I gave her a politely delivered threat

I would be brutal ... 'cause of disrespect toward moi.
I don't fancy HK-ers being disrespectful toward mainlanders without any cause, i.e. just because they are mainlanders.
It's different, when mainlanders behave in HK the same as they ....
Mine has never had a problem that I know of and never with me. Though it probably helps that she speaks fluent Cantonese and prefers to use that from mandarin even though she's not from Guangdong/Hong kong.

What kind of coward anonymously looks to insult sb's wife . Be a man , arrange to meet me in person, in HK, then insult my wife to my face.
